egg cartons for starting seedlings?
Comments (23)A cuke sprout... and poppies... I am so thrilled. I moved the plants out of my window and set up a VERY makeshift grow light. I hung an old 40W tube light over them and put a small heater by the seeds. I surrounded the group of planted egg cartons with plastic boxes (toolboxes mostly) to trap some of the heat. I have been checking the thermometer about every hour and it is keeping at a nice 80 degrees. I hate... HATE spending money on stuff that doesn't work... but if this works I plan to make the real deal for next year. Will post a photo later. Comments (1)I suppose you could use them for fast-sprouting and fast-growing annuals, but they really are not deep enough. Personally, I wouldn't use them....See Moresoil moisture
Comments (3)Swenson: Jif and Greenman are right. However, I would maybe rethink the egg carton method. Like you said, they can dry out pretty quick as there is very little soil that you can pack into an egg carton cell. If I were you, I would invest in a 36 or 72 cell seed starting kit. They are only about $5 and will likely make thing a bit easier on you as they hold more soil in each cell. You can also get a separate dome or some come with the dome lid which will hold in moisture while they are germinating. But you CANNOT use the dome lid in direct sunlight or you will fry your seeds/seedlings. You don't need them in light until after they sprout, then you can remove the lid and place them in the sun. Comments (14)I got my seeds sowed tonight. 68 8oz cups, they don't really fit under the 48'' shop light, they are hanging out the sides a bit. I had wanted to do 3 of ea tom 16 varieties. After the first few I realized they weren't going to fit and went to 2 cups w/ 2 seeds in ea. I'll thin if both germinate. I only have room to plant 1 of ea 15 plants total. I also started 5 different basil's, 4 diff sweet peppers, and a jalapeno. I think a second shop light is going to be needed to keep them all from getting leggy. I should be able to manage that before they all sprout. I winter sowed my lady lavender outside also. I didn't go w/ the styro for enviro reasons, then came home and read all the posts for styro. I think I'll go w/ styro when I pot up. I don't have them in a tray, but I think I'll use a tray to bottom water, put 'em in for about fifteen minutes as many as will fit and rotate....See More- 12 years ago
