What can I grow starting now?

I'm having sooo much fun with my cukes and tomatoes (despite the Early Blight issue) that I'm itching to plant more stuff. Granted its already the end of June, is there anything I can plant now that will have a worthwhile time before fall/winter sets in?

In containers or in ground? In ground any of the squash either summer or winter, okra, peppers if you can find transplants.

scarlet - can you explain the winter potatoes statement? Have you done this? I am not familiar with the winter climate in Maryland but I believe it snows and freezes sometimes. I would be very doubtful that it would support potato growth. Unless the OP has a polytunnel or greenhouse.

If I start growing kale now (outside), will it grow really slow?

I would plant it! We plant kale here in zone 5 as soon as the soil is thawed, in a few weeks you should be great for growing kale. Just be sure to harden off before planting out..... Kale is a cool weather crop, but I have had it going through the summers here in chicago. I would think you have to get it started and up and harvested before your super hot summers kick in....

What can i start now? zinnias, marigolds, etc?

Zinnia's and marigolds grow very quickly on LI once it starts being consistantly warmish (May 1?) I am not going to rush and then have to fuss with them, covering, bringing in, etc. I actually start zinnias every couple of weeks from May-July, as I find I want to fill in spots in the garden. They really take off in the heat. But they do not like our humidity here, so some of my seeds started in summer are acually replacing plants started in spring that got too covered in mildew from the humidity.

Wow, you do have a lot of questions! I will try to answer a few. Yes you did wait a bit long before starting your seeds. Poppies can be sown outdoors now. Direct seed cosmos outside when no danger of frost. You do not need heated mats now, but it would help to get things going faster. Usually you start seeds 6 to 8 weeks before last frost. Depends on the seeds, some take longer than others. I have one that could take up to a year to germinate! Not a usual one. Some seeds need cold stratification in order to germinate. This means they need to be kept cold for a couple months or so. That is why many people wintersow. Check out the faq on that forum for many answers for next year. You can also check out the growing from seed forum. Both have great people on them who will help alot. You can probably sow the rest of your seeds outside in the next week or so, since last frost is fast approaching. Oh, then that will limit your choices substantially. I don't think even 1 squash plant will work in such a small container. Try some chard or kale. They will work in 5 gallons and tolerate the heat.

I bet you can still find seedlings at your local nursery. Peppers, Eggplant and there are smaller varieties of zucchini made for container gardening. My local nursery has a zucchini called EIGHT BALL for containers.

Cabbage (red or short season green) is a perfect fit for 5 gallons, and will give you the most food per area.
