New tip for mosquitos - bite prevention

I was getting attacked (AS USUAL) the other night @ my aunt'sÂ she got a bottle of JohnsonÂs creamy baby oil w/pink cap out Â had me coat myself in it Â NO bites the rest of the night, and we sat out there for a couple of hours on the deck. I am going to invest in several bottles! It worked, and it is good for your skinÂÂShe says it is hard to findÂ.Don't know how FRUGAL the tip is - it is name brand - but thought you might be interested anyway....

A frugal option is growing a patch of lemon balm. When I moved into my house, there was one lonely lemon balm plant growing next to the sidewalk. I let it be. Now I have a patch that is taking over the world. When I go out during mosquito season, I just pick a stalk and rub the leaves on my arms, face and clothing, finishing by sticking the sprig in my hat band. Smells nice and lemony, keeps bugs away, and it's absolutely free. Lemon balm is a mint so it spreads like crazy and in a couple of seasons you can have lots of it from a very small investment if you have to buy it, but you may know somebody who has more of it than they can handle and would let you have a clump for starters.

Thank you! I went out and bought some today. Both my daughter and I get attacked all the time by the boogers and the extra moisterizer on our skin won't hurt either!

It was only $2.39 at Target.

Super reactors to bug bites.

I am very sensitive to bug bites and have other allergies. If there is a mosquito in the yard it will find me and leave everyone else alone! I am a butterfly gardener and for years have brought in the caterpillars to raise since so many are killed by lizards, bees, and such. Up until this year, I have never had a reaction to the caterpillar spines of the Zebra Longwing. When I cleaned the cage where I kept the caterpillars and put in more plant food, I accidently rubbed my arm against the spines of a caterpillar that was under a leaf. A few minutes later, I noticed a raised oblong area that started itching. A little Benadryl gel helped over the next couple of days and the raised bumps went away. A couple weeks later, I got a few ant bites while gardening. Got out the Benadryl again but also noticed the same spot on my arm had raised up again and I didn't have any caterpillars inside to raise this time. I asked my dermotologist about it and she said that can happen, its the histimines reacting in your body. As often as I get bit, I'll be red itchy spots all over by summers end if every bit reoccurs. Maybe you are having a similiar response.

From what I have read on canine development, puppies who bite too hard often have been taken away from their mother and siblings too young. As others have said, a puppy's siblings will yelp if the bite is too hard and will refuse to play. That is intolerable to a pup, so it learns to moderate its bite and to play nicely with others. This lesson is used throughout the dog's life and is known as "bite inhibition." It keeps a puppy from biting its family too hard, a young dog from biting playmates too hard, a grown dog from biting the had that is giving a treat, and a family dog from chomping down on the hand of a toddler who has put it where the dog does not want the toddler to touch, as the dog tries to move the hand away! Yelping immediately when teeth touch you, turning away and stopping the interaction with the puppy, gives it the message that teeth on skin means all good things stop. Whether this is a good dog for you or not, I don't know. I would get the advice of a behaviorist. You might try to find a puppy play group where Molly can spend a few hours at a time, too, if you keep her. This would have to be with an experienced dog facility. I have found doggy day care to be the best thing for improving behavior at home. "A tired dog is a good dog." I believe that the standard is that no puppy should leave its litter mates and mom before 8 weeks of age. Some breeds may have an even older recommended adoption age. But always ask how old the pup was when it was surrendered. Look elsewhere if it was less than 8 weeks old. I wish you and Molly and your family the best!

If you eliminate standing water on your property (or add mosquito dunks, or flush out every week) you will deny the mosquitoes a place to breed and cut WAYYY down on your mosquito population. Of course, if your next door neighbor has a collection of skunky rainbarrels or something right on the other side of your fence, you'll still have a problem.

I'm not aware that baby oil is particularly good for your skin; it's a petroleum product. Skin absorbs things, so I don't personally put anything on my skin I wouldn't be willing (healthwise, if not tastewise) to eat or drink. (I certainly wouldn't get "baby oil" anywhere near a baby of mine, although I did before I knew better.)

If you Google "herbal mosquito repellant" I'm sure you can find one of the many articles on using essential plant oils for the purpose. Many of the blends actually outperform synthetic repellants like OFF. Essential oils can be an investment initially, since a bottle is not cheap, but because you only use a few drops at a time in high dilution they're really quite frugal.

I am not sure how true this is, or frugal.
Last week a friend said that a co-worker told her that Bounce dryer sheets repel skeeters. I thought that I might buy some when I need dryer sheets again and try them after they make a trip through the dryer. I absolutely hate the smell of Off and Repel so I am hoping this will work.

I also plan to track down some lemon balm and try that as well.

I have tried the Bounce dryer sheets - and it didn't work. I do have some lemon balm planted - but the bed it is in does NOT have good soil - i am gonna plant some more in some other beds.

The Johnson's creamy baby oil works better than anything i have found - at a crawfish boil out in a field a couple of months ago, i had put it on before i went. i was the ONLY person not getting bit - ONLY person not grabbing the bug spray.
