New natural protection from Mosquitoes

I have been camping all over the country and all of you fellow campers know, besides rain, nothing ruins a trip more than mosquitoes.

We just took a trip to the panhndle, Florida, where the mosquitoes were out in full. We met the owner of a company that makes a product called Gardener's Armor. He gave us some tubes and he now has a customer for life.

It is all natural and keeps the bugs away. It also has an SPF of 20 and protects the skin from poiosn ivy and oak.

I was absolutely amazed. My kids loved it. They used everyday going to the beach and into the pine woods around the campsite. They were bug bite free and with all the poison ivy around the area they were free from scratching and sores.

This is beyond anything I have tried. Let me know if anyone else has tried it. You can only buy it online at ww.gardener'sarmor.com. I think its about $9.00 per tube.

Thanks to connyguest for this useful tip. I will definitely try this product because every time I go camping my whole body is littered with mosquitoes stitches. I have also tried each and every product but nothing really worked for me personally. Cannot wait to test this new product. If it is really working he has another customer for life. :-)

I would like to try this product as I am very allergic to poison ivy and insect bites. The thing that worries me about it is that you can't find out what's in this product without first spending the money to buy some. Why don't they just list the contents on their web site if it is patented and such a good product?

I have skin allergies. Any time you go to the store you can look at the label of any skin care or health product to see if there is anything in the contents you are allergic to or would choose not to expose yourself to for any reason.

It doesn't seem reasonable to require you to spend $20 plus shipping for a product you don't even know if you can use.

If anyone has a tube of this stuff, please post the contents here as listed on the label and do us all a favor. Then maybe we will buy it.

Squirrels will kill adult birds at feeders also. When I lived around them I had squirrel baffles on the poles and all my feeders had grids. My platform feeder had a 1" grid over it also to keep out the starlings and cowbirds that bully the song birds. Keeping the feeders and birdhouses quite far from fences and trees helps also. Squirrels can jump really far. I have a friend who calls them flying rats. I also had a clear dome over one niger feeder. It's a lot of paraphernalia but I felt like I had to protect them if I was going to lure birds to the feeders. Here we have trouble with hawks that sit on the fence and wait for the quail and small birds to get distracted. There's kind of a downside to feeders and bird baths I guess. Birdhouses are easier to protect. Sounds like you have a good plan for the houses. So nice that you are looking out for the babies.

Patrick, did you know that you can get allergy shots for a mosquito allergy. Mine is a true allergy. I may get 6 or 7 mosquito bites on one day, then in 36 hours, one of the bites begins to swell. It swells to the point that I cannot cover it with my hand, it develops a purple knot the size of a quarter, and it begins an unusual itch that feels dangerous. When I was diagnosed the allergist even insisted that I carry adrenalin for 2 weeks until the shots had time to take effect. That was many many years ago, and after the two weeks or so, my mosquito bites are just annoying, but not dangerous. I still take the shots. I worry about the diseases that they carry and that ticks carry. Aren't you in the medical profession? You might ask to be skin tested. Thanks for your recommendation. I have been using Cutter from Lowes. like you, I put on sun block (Coppertone) then the spray. It doesn't take long to feel very dirty. When I first saw the ad of the new spray on TV, I thought it would be unsafe to breathe. But if the stuff is on your skin, you still breathe it. Sammy

I have had many native wildflowers and some trees growing in pots for up to 12 years. When I moved from my parents'house, I took seedling trees and wildflowers. They grew well for me. Of course, as they spread (especially the wild geranium), I would divide them and share them with friends. The trees needed to have their roots trimmed (and an equal amount of branches) to keep from getting root bound. Planting the wildflowers at the base of the trees gives a fuller, more natural look. So, it *is* possible to grow them as a container garden. Hopefully the rules at the group home would allow for container gardening...or, better yet, allow you to create your own wildflower garden there. Maybe providing them with information about companies and schools who have created native gardens will help convince them. I agree that you should take divisions of your plants and leave some for the next homeowner...hopefully you will convert them! I finally bought a house and land of my own. So, I've begun planting all that I had potted up. I was surprised to find a small patch of Dutchman's Breeches and a Trillim growing in the previous owner's flowerbed! So, who knows, whoever moves into your parents' home may already recognize and appreciate what you've planted. Good luck, David

I think you should research neem oil and see if it will fit the bill for your needs. I mix only a few ounces of neem oil with a few ounces of dyna gro pro tect silicon supplement with about 32 ounces of water in a standard hardware store spray bottle. I apply it in the evenings after the heat of the day when I notice aphids on plants. Works like a charm. You will need to reapply if you see the aphids or feeding reappearing, but it only takes a few seconds to spray a mist over the aphids and the adjacent leaves. It sounds like you are interested in a product that will be safe and effective, which this fits that description. It is extracted from the seeds of the neem tree found in Afro-tropical regions. I've seen a video of a guy drinking it. It is so safe I have used it as a lotion to repel Mosquitos in a mixture of coconut oil. Doesn't smell real great so the coconut oil hides the neem odor, but it works and I don't have to use DEET. In my opinion, spraying plants with insecticides without insects as a preventive measure only enables insects to build a resistance to the active ingredients. The neonicitinoids in Bayer products are suspected of causing colony collapse disorder in honey bees. No need to mess with the pollinators to kill a few aphids. The huge holes in the Echinacea's may be grasshoppers, but might be earwigs or something else. The neem oil will for sure deter the foliar feeding if you can keep applying when you notice it. I gave a few ounces to a guy starting apple trees from seed he brought to Colorado from Michigan. He had aphids in the worst way and the neem oil killed and deterred subsequent issues after only three sprays within a week.
