Buck becoming agressive with does in heat

We have a 3 yr old Nubian buck that is bottle feed and very well

behaved in most cases. He has breed one of our does two years in a row

no problems. We have decided to add a few more does. This year for some

reason he is acting overly aggressive, and even down right cruel to the

does, even when they are in heat.

We are in arizona, a very hot part of arizona and are breeding on the

offtime to make sure the kids are not born in 110+ weather. I was told

the does will come into heat still if put with the buck... this seemed

to be happening but he doesnt seem to wanna breed them. He will but

them into the fence over and over, and even lifted one doe up by her

leg and held it in his horns. Yes he as well as the does are horned.

This was my choice because of safety issues from coyotes and wild dogs

out here being around so much. Anyways. Is this normal? How can I breed

them and not risk them being killed? The buck is very well behaved with

us and has never turned his horns to us.

If it is possible to separate them and put him in a pen that shares a fence with the does, your does will still be able to smell him and hopefully go into heat when you want. When your does go into a standing heat (tail wagging and discharge) you can bring your doe into his pen and either hold her while he does his business or let her loose in his pen and then take her out after she is bred. He is still a young buck and it may take him a while to settle down with the new girls.

But, I think if you could separate them it would be safer for your does.

He is already seperated from them, a connected but well enforced pen. They are only put in there when I think they are in heat. The last doe I put in with him was standing and lifting and swishing her tail at him. But he wanted to beat her up and did not at all try to mount her.

Yeah I currently dont have anyone in with him because Im afraid hell hurt them. I have thought about trying hand breeding him since he is a well behaved boy. It just doesnt seem in the mood to breed.

So you think bringing in the new girls brought on the agression even if he is aggressive to the first doe he has breed before as well?

I live in Zone 10 southern California, but within the coastal zone which has misty conditions spring-earkt summer, then settles into a true Mediterranean climate by August which continues till December when the rains start. Many roses will mildew, ball and sulk here during spring - early summer, and then after the dry weather takes over in August, the same sulky roses will bloom beautifully and have clean foliage till December. I tried growing Carefree Beauty last year - probably planted it in June - a nice healthy ownroot rose from ARE with really strong roots. After the first few weeks in the ground and a promising initial burst of growth, CB just sulked and mildewed. It did not improve after the dry sunny late summer settled in, so I shovelpruned it in December. I sometimes gift unhappy roses to a friend's garden in Topanga Canyon which tho inland from Malibu has 100+ temps in the summer, and these roses are often very happy there as long as they get enough water. So maybe CB would do better in a more classic southern California climate than my microclimate provides.

For Geo - Applejack: Large arching shrub rose, cane hardy, disease free with no spray, good rebloom and apple scented foliage. I have mine in an area that is planted with several albas and it fits right in. I never posted on this thread originally because I could never choose my "favorite" Buck rose. I love so many for so many different reasons! They're not all hardy and they're not all disease resistant...but the one thing I've learned from this forum is that to find out if they do well in your own garden you've got to try them. What one does in Texas does not translate to Michigan and visa versa. Kim, today I read your entire article on HMF "I am NOT an expert" but I have to disagree, you really are!! After reading up on Renae I'm convinced that's what this rose is like you said, except it doesn't seem to have a strong desire to climb. Of course that's just for me, in my climate with my horticultural practices. Southern Louisiana is a very specific climate to grow in. I do think it's a great place for me to carry out my lifelong breeding goals since if a seedling can survive Louisiana's black spot infested humidity and heat it'll be off to a good start! Thanks for the good luck Judith! Also to anyone interested and curious, I have ripening hips on a couple of roses with this rose, 'Renae' as the pollen parent: a few of (Smooth Ballerina x Renae) and a lot of (Thomas Affleck x Renae). I bet those seedlings will be smooth as silk! I can't wait to one day share my creations with everyone!

Well I only have a few things to say about this whole discussion. I am in school right now to become a veterinarian so please don't get angry if you are a vet and find this discussion offensive I'm not trying to bash the profession I want to enter. There are slimes everywhere in every profession because there are going to be slimy greedy people everywhere in the world so why would this profession be any different? There are going to be extremists in every profession. The vet I am interning with right now has prices so low that he might lose his house while other vets are charging so high they can afford to shut their clinic down for a two week vacation. Are there vets in the middle? yes. Just like every other profession. Someone said that petcare is a luxury, which I completely agree with, so if you don't like paying for petcare because you think its too expensive then don't get pets because as someone that truly loves animals I can say that it is sickening to see animals not taken care of because "its too expensive". I am interning with a rural vet so this is probably more common in rural areas than cities but its still a problem. Is what this vet did really any different from what some medical doctors will do to patients that are terminal? no. does she have a right to complain? yes. The world in general is a crazy greedy and overall kind of depressing place to live in because a lot of people only care about themselves so this kind of stuff will always happen. I will say this though if you live in New York its not even a question whether something will be more expensive than elsewhere because its going to be so its not really that surprising that you got price gouged. If you read a lot of medical articles you'll see that they recommend you bring an advocate when you go to see a doctor so that you get all the information you need and so that you don't get tricked into treatment you don't want. While it is sad that this is necessary it really isn't any different than when you go to the vet. Ask questions, ask for opinions, and do you research. Vets are only human to and a lot of times people forget that you don't know what they know so they forget to mention anything. By far this is the biggest complaint that I get from the people at my barn, the vet doesn't explain. So ask or stay ignorant. In the end though pets aren't a necessity of life even though they do make it more enjoyable so if you just can't stand paying all those fees don't have animals its simple as that. Plus a really good plan is to invest in some pet insurance. We got some for our horses and dogs and while we haven't had to use it, it is nice to know that its there when we need it. Just like medical insurance for you, it keeps the cost to you for your petcare down. I guarantee that if you had to pay for medical care (even just a cold) without any insurance it would be a lot more devastating than your vet bill.

Well, you have increased his "harem" and the number of girls he has to impress. Does he still get all looney and blubbery around the does in heat? Has he still been urinating on his face/beard? Has he bred anyone this year? With Oberhasli's they have a specific breeding season Sept-Mar, give or take a month or so. I thought Nubians would breed year round. How long have you left the doe in with him? If she is in standing heat and he is ready, you know it only takes 10 minutes for him to romance her and get it done. Maybe you could try holding him and have someone hold the doe and see if that works.

Well to be honest he doesnt seem very interested at all. The first doe that he has breed before, her name is Gypsy. Gypsy was the first one we put in with him thinking that familiar would be better for the first one. She came into heat, was Urinating at him and flirting... and I think they breed... didnt witness it but she stopped the behavor for 24 hours, the next day hubby saw the buck ramming her into the fence and she was taken out.. that was a little over a month ago, not sure if she was breed but is looking a little fat in the right areas. But with the new ones he shows no interest... at least not when we are around... which is alot. The first female Gypsy we saw him romancing her, but have not seen him doing the same with any of the others, not even the doe I know is in heat. He is def not in full rut because when he is that is rather obvious... Im wondering if Im jumping the gun and its just not his time to go into rut/breed.

I think Im gonna try hand breeding, and Im also gonna try putting the whole herd together again. I put him in a pen by himself because of safety reasons for a few of the herd. [one was his wether brother he was taking advatage of, and the other a doe we arent breeding that doesnt have live babies] But put him with the rest of the herd does and wethers too because thats how he was before.
