Celery Questions

This is my second attempt at growing celery. I am growing Redventure celery. I got the seeds from Fedco. I started the seeds on March 2nd. The plants looked great when I transplanted them into the garden on May 24th. Prior to planting I pruned off the larger stalks and I planted then a bit deeper than they were in the pots. (Followed the directions I have from a National Gardening Association Editors article.) The plants are mulched and have sufficient water. The problem is though the plants look fine, they haven't grown at all. Last year I had a similar problem with Tall Utah. Once I put them in the ground they never grew much. Any ideas?

Make sure you have excellent drainage. Celery prefers slightly acidic soil.

How and with what are you feeding? It is a big feeder and most recommendations I have read say monthly feeding using fish emulsion or compost tea every two weeks. If you are already feeding heavily and that doesn't do it then I would suspect too alkaline soil that is preventing the uptake of the fertilizers.

I started my celery about 3 weeks ago. I believe that you could get some celery this year. May not be a blue ribbon winner but hey how much are you spending 50 cents? I say go for it. I started mine in cardboard egg cartons and they are outside in a sun protected cold frame. I hope to be able to transplant late next week. You may want to direct seed at this point. I did that years ago and had more celery than we could use out of a smallish 3 foot square.

I was in your shoes a couple years ago and have learned A LOT in that time. The person who replied had some good info..... to add on to it... The cool season crops won't live in the heat of summer. You have to plant them early enough to get a crop before the heat takes out the plants. Most or all of these are frost-tolerant or frost-hardy. Other crops thrive in heat and sun during the summer, but die or are very damaged by any frost.... thus, why you have to plant after the last frost of spring. Some of these crops produce until the first frost of fall (although some stop before then.) The timing of when to plant is part of the art of gardening in your local area. For me, I plant peas, lettuce, carrots, beets and radishes quite early in spring. They start producing in a month or two (depends on the crop) and I can plant other seeds or plants after my last frost in the nearby area......... I know the lettuce can co-mingle with the baby tomato plant because the lettuce will be long gone before the tomato takes over. I know the radishes I can plug anywhere and they will produce within 25 days, give or take..... etc. etc. My summer crops that take up a lot of room (eg, squash, cucumbers, melons, tomatoes) but don't really get large until July or so, are normally planted in the same beds as the above-mentioned coop season crops. I haven't planted bush beans, but I will try to find photos of my pole beans....

Well, I found a photo of one that seems to look like what you describe, but there is no accompanying info. I wish I knew of a good reference but I haven't ever come across one. I think Army worm or Army caterpillar must be generic and describes behavior. I saw a lot of caterpillars that were called Army caterpillars but they were all very different. We had an invasion here several years ago and they were actually the color of old fashioned army fatigues green. There were thousands, all marching the same direction. When to harvest Chinese Celery seeds

I harvest all my Chinese Celery about 2 months ago, except one for the seeds. But this plant just keeps on growing. It's already 3' tall. The leafs are yellowish somewhat. But the whole plant, including stems and leafs, still looks very healthy. It shows zero sign of dying back or even drying out. I see no seed pod at all. So my question is: how much longer shall I wait till I can collect the seeds? Thanks.

Hmm... First year here too. I container grew them, because i heard they can be hard to grow. I just have kept them wet, but no, i haven't fed mine yet? Compare to mine... I started mine in March? and they are now about a foot tall, but not very thick. Very worthwhile to grow if you buy celery alot! I will grow more next year.

You could try top-dressing with some compost or worm castings. How deeply is your planting bed cultivated? Maybe try forking it up to loosen the soil.

A couple observations -
(Followed the directions I have from a National Gardening Association Editors article.)
Who knows what that means?

I planted then a bit deeper than they were in the pots. Maybe too deep?

The plants are mulched and have sufficient water. Maybe to wet?

I grow my celery with lettuce and seldom water either. Exceptions are rain & heat of summer. They get early morning sun only. They seem to do fine there each year.

I'm not having any probs w/ my Redventure from Pinetree - tho it did grow slowly @ 1st, perhaps it's not getting enough daylight?What do you use for food? I always water my transplants in w/ Maxicrop seaweed extract & think it really helps get them off to a good start.

Looking @ the dates you gave, I see that it's only been a coupla weeks - I say give it a bit more time to get over the shock of transplanting.....
