Pole beans balk in heat, so it may be that they will start producing as cooler weather arrives. They usually take about 3 weeks longer than bush varieties but there is a lot of variation in varieties. I hear that you northerners have had a little heat this summer.{{gwi:106678}}
I have not tried celery for 65 years so I can't help you there.

In general you plant cool season crops like English peas, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, spring cabbage etc. as early in the spring as you can can. Summer crops are planted on or after last frost date. That would be beans tomatoes squash etc. fall crops are planted about 60 days before fist frost date and would include frost resistant vegetables like turnips, rutabagas, kale mustard, broccoli, cauliflower fall cabbage, collards etc.

FWIW I grew pole beans last year and was frustrated with the late developement and smallish harvest. My bush beans always seem to produce like crazy, so that's all we grew this year and weren't disappointed. Got 2 crops!

The cool season crops won't live in the heat of summer. You have to plant them early enough to get a crop before the heat takes out the plants. Most or all of these are frost-tolerant or frost-hardy.

Other crops thrive in heat and sun during the summer, but die or are very damaged by any frost.... thus, why you have to plant after the last frost of spring. Some of these crops produce until the first frost of fall (although some stop before then.)

The timing of when to plant is part of the art of gardening in your local area. For me, I plant peas, lettuce, carrots, beets and radishes quite early in spring. They start producing in a month or two (depends on the crop) and I can plant other seeds or plants after my last frost in the nearby area......... I know the lettuce can co-mingle with the baby tomato plant because the lettuce will be long gone before the tomato takes over. I know the radishes I can plug anywhere and they will produce within 25 days, give or take..... etc. etc. My summer crops that take up a lot of room (eg, squash, cucumbers, melons, tomatoes) but don't really get large until July or so, are normally planted in the same beds as the above-mentioned coop season crops.

I haven't planted bush beans, but I will try to find photos of my pole beans....

You can see my cheap trellis with some of the baby beans starting to climb up on June 3rd (look at the left t-post... you can see the tallest bean at that time. The others are hard to see because they are short.)

This is the same trellis today... different angle, but you get an idea of the growth! FYI - there are cucumbers growing towards the ground and some have climbed up the beans... but most of those vines are runner beans (red flowers) with some Blue Lake beans (white flowers) mixed in.

My beans produce throughout our heat (it's been over 100f all week, over 90 all month,) but they get past their prime way too fast (the beans go from tiny to too big really fast.) Some types produce for me better in the heat than others (Kentucky Wonder and Blue Lake pole beans never seem to slow down while the runner beans do.)

Another set... These are basically from the same vantage point. Again, June 3rd vs. today. In the older shot, you can see beets in the forefront next to a Big Max pumpkin. The beets I harvested long ago, before the pumpkin took over (as did a volunteer Roma tomato.) FYI-that pumpkin has been cut back to about 20% of its growth. All that lettuce along the bed is long gone and in their place is a pepper plant and various summer herbs (basil....)

The bed to the left of this had peas, carrots, radishes and more beets on June 3rd (although you can only see some peas in that shot.) It now has melons, beans and tomatoes.

benmca13, I've never heard of growing celery from the head. Would love to know if it works. I've heard of planting the root end of leeks. I'd love to try as I've never had much luck with celery, even though I am the great grand-daughter of the 1922 National Celery King!

I am green with envy that garden is beautiful I wish I had that much space. I am growing pinto and royal burgundy beans at this time I have heard of growing celery and lettuce like that but I haven't tried that yet.

edweather, it's a Big Max. I'm lucky to have a DH willing and able to build me those raised beds..... and all he wants in return is a giant pumpkin. haha :)
