Advice please - when should we reintroduce fledglings?

Cigars around, our Toulouse goose was sitting on 12 eggs and after a long, 30 day wait, she managed to hatch out 3 Â on Mothers day! WeÂre thrilled.

HereÂs our current dilemma though: We observed a few times during that day. She remained sitting as far from the nest as she could get, coddling the 3 that hatched. A fourth hatchling lay in the straw unattended for many hours.

My Mom, the chicken farmer always told me how disappointed she was during hatching time, explaining that  if only the hen would sit a day longer youÂd have more chicks, but the hen is so anxious to get up and be a mom, sheÂll often abandoned the nest for the first few hatchings. WeÂve read the back and fourth on that so donÂt know if itÂs true or not. StillÂkeeping this in mind, by 9:pm that night, we decided perhaps we should intervene. Not to be greedy, but we were worried about the little fellow that had freshly hatched. This time of year, the weather is pretty schizy. The new hatchling was still wet and struggling, the temperature was dropping, and the goose had STILL not bothered to move toward him and warm or nudge him. So we packed up the chick and the remaining 8 eggs, and set up our old brooder box and lamp. Upon closer examination, two of the eggs had started to pip so we put the fledgling and the pipped eggs under the lamp. Needless to say, the fledgling started to perk up and by Monday night/Tuesday morning, we had 3 chicks wobbling around, chirping and learning to walk, eat, drink, etc.

On Sunday night when we intervened, just as an experiment, we took the remaining 6 eggs and put them in a makeshift incubator which consisted of a basket, electric heating pad wrapped in terry cloth, and a wet rag for a little humidity (thought the brooder box might have done just as well). What did we have Toulouse? (ok  bad pun). Surprisingly, well over 48 hours later, three of THOSE eggs began making crackly sounds. So we put them into the brooder with the three new hatchlings and they too are starting to pip. ItÂs now Weds. And in all likelihood, weÂll have three more newbies by tomorrow  on top of the fledglings that hatched on Monday  Tues.

This means weÂll have 6 new babies to either hand back to Mom, or raise ourselves and introduce at 3-4 weeks. Which would be best? Should we wait? Or should we try and introduce them as soon as possible? Giver her only 3 at a time? Or wait until the end of the week and give her all 6? (This would give her a total of 9!).

Also, thereÂs the three adults who are highly interested in the goings on in that crate with Mom and her 3 babies. No matter how we handle the Mom and fledglings, eventually weÂll have to bring the whole gaggle together. Will the gander or two adult females harm the babies? We plan to introduce new mom and kids to the flock with a fence between for awhile  but maybe this isnÂt necessary.

Comments appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks
