Brussel sprouts starting to put sprouts!!!

My 3 brussel sprout plants are only about 2 feet tall, but in the leaves at the arm pit of the leaves, I see tiny baby sprouts starting to grow!!!!!!! SOOOOO exciting!!!!! -cass

Yippee!!! Mine too!!!!! LOL. Let's hope we both enjoy a great harvest.

Never heard that one macky. I think they all prefer pretty fertile soil. I think it's all about a timing thing. I've had differently timed successions of broccoli and cauli in the same plot turn out different sized heads. I can plant them from Aug-Feb, but I notice the closer I get to the winter solstice to planting, the smaller the head. Which makes sense because the amount of sunlight. I also notice that my winter harvests(when planted in late/summer/early fall) are a bit better than my early summer summer harvests. With my Brussels, I get big plants and I get sprouts. They're just always loose leaf sprouts. I read last year that July is supposed to be optimum for them here, so I'll give it one more shot I don't know how that's supposed to work out though -- our summers don't really get going until late july. I'm having the same debate with myself about some sprouting broccoli from spring. Now that the fall broccoli seedlings are up and growing, keeping the old plants seems like a bad idea. They are too big for row covers, so I'd have to spray them with Bt regularly and I don't think they will be worth the hassle. Around here spring-planted brussels sprouts always blast (produce loose, leafy sprouts) because they mature in hot weather. If your plants have held their fire this long, they will probably start budding soon. I suggest staking the plants, even if they seem sturdy now. In my experience, upright plants produce much better than those than tilt.

Around April 20, started from seed around March 20. They do very well in part shade, heavy soil, though in that area every other brassica I have is also doing wonderful. The cultivar, the name escapes me but it is the only OP "old" cultivar that Territorial Seeds sells. It is my first try, incidentally, I am growing them for a friend, though clearly there will be enough for me (8 plants) and for the Thanksgiving banquet.

These were not just a few aphids! They were covering the plants and down into the leaves of the buds! Yuk! I sprayed before pulling because there were so many and I didn't want to shake them (live) all over the rest of the garden! I think they've already hit my new broccoli. I've never HAD aphids in the 6-7 years I've been vege gardening. What I have now is chard, some snow peas, some late green beans, I'm just pulling up the tomatoes, some broccoli and I have lettuce and beets ready to plant. Do aphids bother any of these, or should I shut down the garden for the winter?

No sprouts here yet, but congratulations to you both :)

Didn't start mine (winter sow method) until 5/9 and transplanted into garden 1st week in June. As of this a.m. they are only about 8" tall, however at transplant they were no more than 2" tall :)

My brussels sprout plant was humming along,no sprouts but maybe a foot and a half tall when it was damaged in a hail storm on Friday. Several large leaves were snapped off or in half at the stalk. I trimmed off the snapped ones. Will it recover to produce sprouts? The main stem/stalk still seems healthy...

Im not sure, this is a first year for me on brussel's....Is the leaf stalks still in good shape from you cutting them off? The sprouts grow at the base of the leaf stems, so if there is no place for them to grow that might be a problem. BUT its still early, and theres plenty of time for them to grow new healthy leaves!!!! -cass
