Coffee grounds: for tomatoes or not

I am fairly new to gardening. I've read how good coffee grounds are for most plants and that potatoes love them. But I've read conflicting reports about tomatoes. Some say they are acid lovers so put it right on the soil & others say it is bad for them. I want to use used coffee grounds because I've read it can make the soil better and it repels certain bugs. Also can it be used for carrots, radishes, bell peppers? Thanks in advance for your help!
