Brussel Sprout seedlings keep dying!

Hi All,

About 4 months ago I successfully started 8 brussel sprout seedlings under lights. As fate would have it, I did not get these planted in time, and we had a really warm late spring, so the effort was mostly wasted. The plants were big and beautiful though!

I have now attempted to start new seedlings for a late June/Early July planting and they keep dying. I've had over 36 seedlings die to date and I'm so frustrated.

The only difference this time is that I'm trying to grow them under natural light. I have them on a bench outside where they get 8-9 hours of light a day. Here is what happens

1) Seedlings germinate in about 4 days

2) They grow almost two inches tall and almost leggy. They flop over within one week of germination.

3) Slowly the the stem thins and turns white where the stem meets the planting medium.

4) Sprout falls over completely and stem wastes away where it is turning white.

I'm running out of seeds and one of the seeds is the hard to find purple variety! Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

Thanks!

Kim
