exceptional B4 and after shots

Wanted to share my success story. Property was all wooded, but prior owners always raked the leaves into a nice curved area. Took down some trees, expanded the curves into pathways and turned out great. Its been featured in two different magazines - I lead them in with these before and after shots. It changes every year, voles increase the need for new plants here and there, things got a bit larger than expected, but overall, I'm happy.

Lamora - I think it SEEMS like something of a guessing game until you understand what many of us already understand and try so hard to share with others; something I can see you recognize and are trying to deal with by making your own soils. BTW - I applaud you for that. You understand the principle, that soils that hold excessive amounts of water do not allow you to water properly w/o compromising root health or function; you just need to fine tune the ingredients to make sure you won't run into any unexpected problems with pH and N tie-up down the road. As you can see, you have plenty of support, and all the help, clarification, and guidance you need is yours for the asking. Remember, now is not a good time to be repotting, unless the plant is likely to die w/o intervention. Your plant's energy reserves are generally very low (lowest they will be during the entire growth cycle) in late winter and spring, making early summer and summer the best time for repots. Also, as your soils get less & less water-retentive, and you make them so they don't hold perched water (no soggy layer at the bottom of the pot), that oft repeated directive to only pot up one pot size or whatever other comparative size increase is used, goes right out the window. When you're using soils that don't support significant amounts of perched water, you can plant very small plants in very large pots with very little concern for root issues, as long as you're reasonable about watering intervals. Thank you, Julia. wasn't doing so good all day,and my daughter asked me if I would like to go to wal mart to get a few things, and I told her yes,i would, so we went and caught in a real downpour trying to get back to the car whenwe wa leaving the store.It came a flood, she got wetter then I did, but we ok.I wish you could grow some of these nice ruffled ones, too as they are so pretty. rutz.Thank you, miss laucius is a 7 inch bloom, some times 7.5.I couldn't find where it was at until I spotted that bloom sticking up. Kay. wild one seems to be a nice one every day. has a lot of substance to it.The daughter and I got back from wal mart and it really did pour hard, and wild one looked like it didn't get any of it, but, know it did.

I have allergies to all fur bearing animals, pollens, dusts, molds, etc, and asthma. I could never imagine life without a dog, and have worked at shelters and rescue. Some coats and dogs flare me more than others. What has worked for me for my personal pets, are dogs with an extremely short, fine coat. I would keep a soft cloth by the door to mist with a water bottle for a wipe down on reentry into the home on pollen and mold days. With my dog Deja, I was able to live with her symptom free. She was a Beagle mix, absolutely with some terrier of some sort. We slept under the covers in the same bed. I was always pretty good with Labs/mixes, as long as they were wiped often with damp cloth and bathed every 3 weeks, or so. Dogs with a coat similar to a Dobermans, a Greyhounds, pit bulls, or even finer, seemed best for allergies and asthma in my case. No Shar Pei. Those flare me something fierce. Had a Bichon, many years ago. Kept her shaved. No allergy symptoms. Now I have a Catahoula/some kind of herding shepherd mix who has a short coat and some sort of wicked undercoat who sheds like a beast. I am having some problems, even without pollen in the air. Hoping this settles somewhat as in a few months she'll be on a year of living indoors and getting dog food. Fostering is a fantastic experience, if you consider it! Those programs will find good matches for your family and a dog in need.

Thanks again Patricia. Fortunately we remain healthy and are doing everything possible to stay that way. The past several weeks has been overwhelming to say the least. 3 weeks ago a thunderstorm rolled in and there was a lightning strike very close to the front of the house and moments later one right behind it. That took out all our TV's, many electronics, the robot lawnmower (which thankfully we rent by the month) several remote controlled bedroom ceiling fans and now this... So the 'design challenge' is going to be what LVP to replace it with. The existing wood floor is 3/8" thick plus the underlayment which partially drives what to choose. The bigger issue is what floor to pick with the pale green walls, the pale green couch and loveseat, the red leather recliner, teak bookcase, teak stereo rack (with dead 3D TV :0( . ) . and a teak chair not seen in the pics below. It's been about 36 hrs and we are certain that this floor is not salvageable. So . any suggestions to blend in what we have (couch & LS are 9 mo old) would be most welcome. Thanks - Wayne

What I like best is the 3-4 ft ? high row of the same shrub behind all of the splashy colors that is holding all of the composition together. Plantings with a forest background can be difficult to pull off, as the forest behind it is a strong draw for the eye. This back row of shrubs helps to isolate your plantngs from the chaotic view of the forest beyond, which makes these before and after pictures an good example of why something seems to work.

I echo your sentiments, unfortunately there was a thread some time back outlining why many won't. It had something to do with potential theft of illectual property and GW's policy of copyrighting. Many of those concerned were designers but there were also some hobbyists concerned about it as well. Too bad...

Excellent reminder, GNGal. Also unfortunate is the reluctance to encourage honest examination and critique of posted photos.

What is right? What is wrong? What could be tweaked for improvement? What other direction(s) could this design have taken? This sort of intellectual discourse used to happen here and the education was delightful. So many folks had "Ah Ha!" moments when they read an observation that finally made sense of it all.

Thanks for the comments. It's sad to think that designs are not shared. My husband encouraged the B4 and after and I wish I took more of them before we made all the changes. I love to see other gardens, but especially those designed by regular people - not designers. I'll watch the TV shows to see what the pro's do. I guess I would be flattered if someone copied my picture and used it for entertainment purposes. However, if they made money from it.... that'a another thing. I post them anyway... I think it is worth it to share the experience even though there is risk.. .. and the joy of reading the responses makes it worthwhile. I don't get many visitors to my garden so you guys are my audience. Thanks!!
