How lovely to put lilacs out for your Mother's memory, bonjo. She left you a lot of her garden wisdom, I'm sure. My Mother did, and I think of her in her gardens often.

For all of us that never outgrew playing in the dirt how wonderful that you will always remember the joy your mom had from her gardens. She left you a legacy for sure. I sincerely hope mine feel that way about me someday.

If you've never gardened much before, don't be discouraged if you kill more than you grow for a while. I slayed them regularly for the first couple years I gardened in Minnesota. Now I've moved to Oklahoma and it's a learning experience all over again. I've already lost a lot. But you keep on trying and learning and you'll get better at it!

TGIF, tmps in the low 80's today, will work in the garden, until I melt. I usually have to fight off slaying the garden with a variety of Wild turkey's, rabbits, voles, gophers,earwwigs, plus our two cats love that soft dirt for you know what! Then it will get up to 108 sometimes. On mother's day I plan to bring flowers to my mother, then I will head north 30 miles, and bring flowers to my grandmother, my great grandmother, great great grandmother, and finally to my great great great grandmothers sites, and will clean the family's plots. Then home to plant.Happy mother's day to all.

That is the Nicest and best thing I have ever heard to celebrate a mothers life, a mothers day garden, and I too loved the headstone it will make people stop and stare in wonder as they pass it in years to come, I bet people go home after seeing it, saying?? I wonder what that means and discusing possibilities, for years and years to come, I know I would!
I lost my mum 11 years ago, and the worst thing about a mum is, who do you go to when you are hurting and makes you feel better? and you hurt the worst you ever have because they have gone and you cann't go to them, I think this is when you truely grow up? as you may have a lovely father but it isn't the same relationship, mums have wandered down the same road as daughters, made the same and differenet mistakes along the way, understand the pain of cramps! our children falling over, worrying about everyone but themselves, so this is a wonderful Idea and I am going out and buying a flaming Katy (if I can get them here to remember my mum (Katy) as she always loved the plant and felt it summed up her personality!

I'm so sorry you lost your dear mother. Mine is gone too. That first year, everything you do will be the first time you do it without mom. Well, I cannot think of a better way to spend the day than gardening. Wouldn't she be pleased! Heartfelt condolences.

I lost my Mom 2 1/2 years ago she was quadraplegic my entire adult life... from Multiple Sclerosis.......but I remember her as a child (fondly) in her gardens.

If it is quite allright with you....I am going to get me a slate and carve "GROW Da^^it" on the face in honor of your Mom Katie (My name too)
She'll be honored in gardens on BOTH sides of the country, then!

Thank you for your thoughts. Yes this will be a year of firsts. For two of my close friends also as they have lost their mother's in the past few months. I will treasure the past 4 year's as I moved back to my hometown to help her. We spent many happy hours at nursery's, thrift shopping, just hanging out. She lived in the home my grandfather built for my parents before I was born. She was fearless, as was her mother Hilda. I wear a silver cuff bracelet that was my mother in laws in honor of her memory, and bought another one in honor of my mother with her name Glady's on the front, and inside I had it inscribed with her nickname Happy Butt. I wear it every day, even in the vineyard's. (Get it, Glad Ass) sorry humor runs large in my family. She truly was my hero. Were all somebody's mother. Again Happy mother day to all, now I am off to go plant away.

I have always spent Mothers day in the garden, My day consists of the family grilling steaks and me planting all day. I have 3 daughters (11 -30 yrs.) and when they grumble about helping me in the garden I tell them, someday whem I'm gone, you will be glad for these times and the skills you don't even know yet that you have learned. Heres to Moms everywhere, Happy Mothers Day to all.

The sun is shining and it is Mothers Day so all must be right with the world! My mom has been gone now for 17 years and though she was a city dweller it is when I am in my garden that my thoughts are of her. I often wonder if she is happy with the path I have taken since her passing. Moving back to her home town to be close to the rest of my family and leaving the city and its endless possibilities. Don't we always try to do what Mom tells us? Even when they are gone? To Moms everywhere I hope you have a happy sun shiny kind of day today.
