EuroDesert Rose Garden

Corner of Sundown Trail & Oregon Trail, Morongo Valley

Sunday, May 8, 2011 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The EuroDesert Rose Garden has been forced to close. Don't miss this final chance to stroll through our five-acre rose garden with over 5,000 roses - one of the largest and most diverse rose gardens in the United States - and this istoric sale of the remaining roses, garden art, structures and miscellaneous garden related materials at lowest ever prices. Everything must be sold!

Roses available in pots up to 15 gallons in size as well as a "dig your own program" for roses from the garden.

No admission charge

Directions: Highway 62 (29 Palms Highway) to Bella Vista. Right on Bella Vista, which dead ends into Canyon.

Turn left on Canyon and immediately turn right on Sundown Trail.

Street address is: 9878 Sundown Trail. Note: Do not take Sundown Trail off Highway 62 or

you will be on the wrong side of 62.

I went for the first time last weekend and it is a garden not to be missed! If you want to learn what a particular rose looks like when fully mature, here's the place to go. You can see it in comparison to so many others too. How might it look in your yard? What does that foliage look like? What is the ultimate shape of the plant?

As Eurodesert is closing, and roses are being sold all the time, there just won't be an opportunity again to see and be able to purchase such a variety of very rare roses. Some never seen in North America before.

So put on a pair of comfortable walking shoes and plan to spend the day absorbing rose history and adding something very special to your own garden.

Before I point out what a wonderful opportunity this is, let me also add that Cliff is a very special person. To own one (or more) of Cliff's mother plants is more than just acquiring a rose you like. It is also a link to the wide world of roses and the people who make it possible for the rest of us. So, anyone who even slightly suspects they are going to kick themselves for not jumping on this, jump on it. As more and more nurseries fold, there will be fewer opportunities to acquire specimens easily. While Vintage Gardens is absorbing much of Cliff's stock, they can't produce all their roses every year. The next time you may want a rose from Cliff's list, you may have to shell out $45 and wait two years for custom rooting.

EuroDesert Roses: Spotlight on Polyanthas

No matter what climate zone you're in, if landscaping enters into your DIY schedule this year, polyanthas are the way to go! The class originated in Northern Europe as bedding roses for parks and along roadways. Modern "ground cover" and landscape roses pretty much are polyanthas. Poulsen's "Towne & Country" series are all polys. Flower Carpet roses are mini repeat flowering ramblers used as polys. Nothing you could plant for mass effect can out perform polys and you're not going to find such an amazing selection of these roses as is assembled in EuroDesert's sale. Plant them as borders for walks, drives, along retaining walls, fences, property boundaries. Potting them in sufficiently sized pots of the proper type will give you all summer color with very little required of you. Remember, floribundas were originally "Hybrid Polyanthas". Iceberg IS a hybrid polyantha, so think of using these as you would an Iceberg or one of the Knock Out or Flower Carpet roses, only without paying royalties on the plant nor planting the same thing your local gas station has. How odd that a member of a *roses* forum would refer to one of the greatest collections of roses in the world in such a derogatory manner. To me Eurodesert is a treasure to be savoured and a delight to visit like other magnificent repositories like the Huntington. I was thrilled to be able to see so many wonderful roses all gathered in one spot, in full mature height, blooming, and very healthy. In other great gardens I've visited, I have also felt honored to have had the privilege to stroll through and learn, but with this particular garden there is the added bonus of being able to buy the rare varieties on display. I am very saddened to lose it. It has obviously been a labor of love. I've also been to my local garden center. They too have roses for sale in 15 gallon containers. Not as mature as what Eurodesert has, and nowhere near the selection, plus those at the local garden center likely come with rose mosaic virus. Prices for these? About $35 or $36 a piece. Another nursery nearby has lower prices (and smaller plants), but I wouldn't consider buying from them at any price. They have a few mass-marketed roses (and who knows if they are correctly labelled), but many of them were already showing the telltale signs of rose mosaic virus patterning in the leaves. Diseased roses at any price aren't worth it in my book. I'm not bringing sick plants into my garden to infect it. Cheap certainly, but no bargain.
