Are my onions getting close to harvest?

Hello eveyone! Started Georgia sweet onions (granex) from a local big box store as a bundle of transplants. I planted them in the fall. Some are big, some are small, and some have begun to flower. I know once they flower that they won't keep very well. I also haven't watered them for about two weeks. When do y'all think they are finished? Am I close?

Oh no, those babies have more time to get bigger.

They will grow some more, and the tops will start to flop over and die off. Then it will soon be time. You look on track for an awesome harvest.

Wait for more brown on the tops.

Judging from the oic, I think, NOT YET. The stems are still standing upright. Therefore, the bulbs are still growing. When the stems collaps and the neck gets soft and seems to dryiny up, then there is no colaboration between the leaves and the roots.Then is the time to harves. My yellow ones have almost reached that stage right now. I am waiting for the ground to dry up (after a heavy rain) then I will harvest them. I have already harvested my Texas Sweets

i've planted copra 4" on center and they were round, i now plant 6" on center for larger onions. are you sure you received the right onions? ammuming that you did, you say you tilled the soil over and over but has the soil had compost or manure added to it? soil needs organic matter not just tilling. also is your soil rocky? now is a good time to add manure and shredded leaves since you won't plant until spring. never add fresh manure to soil you are about to plant or that has plants growing in it as the salts will burn the plants. the exceptions are rabbit and llama manure. tom

In zone eight we always plant garlic in the fall but I'm not sure about your zone. I usually harvest garlic mid summer when all but about seven of the leaves have turned brown. Pull them up and let them dry out in a shady spot for a week or so until all of the leaves dry. At that point you can use it or store it for the winter. It will last from four to ten months or so depending on variety. Onions from sets usually do better as green onions rather than bulb onions. The green onions can be harvested all winter if the ground isnt frozen. If the onions don't go to seed in the summer they will start to grow large bulbs and when the tops start to die down they are ready to pull. Good luck. Theresa.

Thanks guys for the notes back. I'm getting ready to check out that "U-Pick" site. Island Pete-thanks for the invite. Are the tangerines and grapefruit ready to be picked? Upon closer inspection of my neighbor's trees, it looks as though most are still somewhat green. I'm familiar with your area of town. My son is a student over at St. Pete High so I'm over there twice a day. Maybe someday after school we can both stop by if it works for you. Thanks again for the offer. Sue.

Why would you not want to water them? You haven't been? They need regular watering.

Onions are tied to day length so they will continue growing until well after the equinox 21st of June when the days begin to shorten.

Harvest is several weeks after that but you keep watering them until the tops break and lay over - they will do it all on their own - and begin to brown and shrivel and the neck dries out, then you can pick them..

I was told to lay off the watering close to harvest time. I will give em a good soaking in the morning.

You are a few weeks away. The Yellow Granex is normally harvested in May, but yours are a bit behind. They will fall over and the tops will die. Until then they take a lot of water to bulb up.
My short day reds are late this season also.

It may go without saying, but you can start harvesting some now for fresh use if you like. I think there is something special about the flavor of a young bulbing sweet onion on the grill. We just slice them in half, pull of any lower/outer leaves that are brown or tough and grill the whole thing. Yum!
