Hakurei turnips are split or have bug holes in them

ok... my CSA farm was able to produce these perfect round Hakurei turnips.. so I decided to try them in my garden. His were sweet mine are not, his were blemish free and ALL of mine have some sort of insect holes burrowed in them. Many of mine also split.

Any tips on growing these... CSA grew them in Fall and I am growing them in spring... I use a square foot garden type mix (compost, vermiculite and peatmoss) in raised beds and his are straight in the ground... do these things make a difference?

I know am using the same seeds as he is. Thanks.
