Squash vine splitting - help?

Hi,

It's happening again this year. My squash plants have been out for 2 - 3 weeks and have been growing like crazy. On occasion I've noticed a few of the plants have flopped over one way or the other. Perhaps due to wind or just plain growing too fast.

They seem to right themselves within a few hours.

What's happening again is that I notice the plants that have flopped a bit have developed a split stem from the dirt all the way up to the first set of leaves. This is often 6 - 8 inches. The plant wilts terribly and seems to struggle.

I'm wondering how to either prevent this or even more importantly, how to recover the plants. Last year the plants that did this didn't produce much fruit.

When this happens, do you cover that part of the plant with dirt as recommended for removal of SVB?

Is it possible for the plant to recover fully to produce as well as the other plants? Should I just yank'em now and replant?

Thanks for any advice,

Erin
