Hi all, been lurking here for long time, ashamed to say how long. Love your forum, tons and tons of reliable information! Right now we have 2 dogs,3ducks,2parrots,2cats and 3horses. Your forum makes me crave more animals than my hubby can take...goats....a cow...oh and chickens....definately want chickens....so far hubby says he is drawing the line at monkies, but who knows, maybe some day! =D

Im sure most of my questions have been answered on here before, I just can't seem to find the posts. We have 1 adult pekin and 2 Indian Runner/Pekin mixes who are hatching out ducklings as I type. Last check there were 7. Here goes my list of questions:

How long til everyone that is going to hatch, hatches out?(1 of the eggs in nest looks dark, like it went bad)There are 12or13 more eggs between the 2nests.

Can we leave the babies in there for mommas to raise or should we remove them and set up our own brooder?

If we leave them, how close to nest do we put the chick feeder&waterer? Do they still need a heat lamp if they are tucked in cozy coop with momma?

Is it safe to put Bill(daddy)in with them at night? Mommas nag at him and he goes to his own corner of the pen, least that is what has been happening since they started sitting. He can't even look in their direction or they go to yellin' at him, he looks embarrassed and settles in his own spot.

Do we leave the egg shells from the ones that have hatched or try to clean them up?

Thought I had read runners and pekins won't sit, but these two seem to have a knack for it. Their nests are side by side and the babies are switching back and forth, is that a normal all in the family thing?

Everyone is locked in tightly at night, during the day the hatch is open and there is access to a small pond. Will the mommas know when it's ok for them to come out or do we need to police what is going on?

A point in the right direction of which posts to search or any info you have would be much appreciated!

Hi and Welcome!

When my muscovy eggs hatched (I had 13 to hatch) it took a few hours. But, one time I had a muscovy that only had one egg to hatch and it took all day long! So, it can take anywhere from a few hours to all day once they start hatching.
If the eggs is dark then it is probably a bad one, but I'd leave it in there for a while until the others hatch just incase.

Where are the babies? Outside? In a shed/barn/room? In your house? You can leave them for the moms to care for; they will take care of them, but I took my babies and raised them myself.

I don't think they need a lamp if you let them stay with the mom. Ducks in the wild don't have a lamp.

I took the shells away after they hatched. I also heard those kinds won't sit good, and I have also heard that khaki campbells won't sit on their eggs either, but I had a KC lay some unfertile eggs and she sat on them faithfully for several days until i just decided to take them.

Yeah, I think she'll know when the babies can come out and swim in the pond. It's her instincts; she'll know :)

wow..this was harder than I thought. There were many more eggs hidden down in the hay, most were already turning dark.
One nest had no shells so that duck is not a momma, she just thinks she is and has claimed the babies, stressing the other momma out.
The Mommas took the babies out for a walk and things went hay wire. Everyone was chasing everyone else and the ducklings were scooting along trying to keep up.
Bill kept picking up babies and running with them......errr..is he just daffy?does he want to kill them?does he maybe think they are hurting his gals?
Now have the not really a momma and bill in regular pen(back of barn)and momma w/babies in seperate room.
How long should I keep everyone apart? Few days? Until they can say DaDa so he knows what they are? Will the fake momma still fight the real momma for these ducklings?
Should I just give up and raise the babes myself?

We live in Columbus OH and while mowing our hay fields unfortunately hit a mother mallard who had built her nest in the hayfield. The 9 eggs were not damaged so I put them in an incubator. Nine days later, 8 of them hatched. They are now just 2 weeks old so I have a few more weeks with them. From what I have read on the internet, their instincts should take over and come Fall, they should fly South for the Winter as nature intended. For now, they are in a large blow up baby pool in our home office with another one just like it outside with shallow water in it for swimming. For now, I carry them to/from the house in a big box so they can play in the pool outside. I put a board in the pool so when they are ready they just walk up it and jump out of the pool. Since they have imprinted on me, they follow me around our yard foraging for bugs and whatever else they find of interest. Since the pool wont keep them contained for much longer (I dont want to come down one morning and find them all running around the office leaving their calling cards)we are in the process of modifying a 10x10 dog run in our backyard for them to move in to. We fashioned a floor from plywood so predators cannot dig underneath and get them and are putting on a "roof" along with a tarp to protect them from rain. We also put up a 2.5 foot barrier around the edge attached to the walls for extra protection. We will most likely put in some sort of "house" or box for them to get into at night for sleeping. The plan is as they start to grow their adult feathers and attempt flying we will allow them to come and go from the "coop" during the day at will and will lock them up at night for protection. Then, when it is time Im assuming they will leave. I bet they will come back next year though; hopefully. It would be nice to see them again and see how many were able to avoid the hunters.

yep, of course i knew it, lol!! thanks for the advice. i've ripped out the spinach that had bolted, added some compost, and then moved all 4 peppers - wish i knew how to add pics - they're still in the same bed but have waaay more space! they seem to be doing ok - still no flowers though and the leaves are a little droopy. my bush beans are fruiting like crazy, as well as the squash, which i was worried about because as soon as the flowers opened, they'd shrivel up and fall off! @ hosenemisis - we've had to major heat waves in the last couple weeks, as i'm sure my neighbor 'davis sue' can attest to. we've been so unusually warm the last couple months, so not normal! i'm right on the SF Bay, but in a pretty little valley (you know the california 'happy cows'?), and the immediate bay area never gets too warm during the summer. our heat happens late august through october. it's usually cool, foggy mornings, with very mild afternoons, and chilly evenings. so with this unusual weather, i'm looking for my brassicas to bolt any moment! @ deep roots - thanks for the compliment about the bed depth, i was needing that about now, lol!! in my second bed where the cabbage and broccoli are... well, the broccoli is growing like crazy, poor cabbage - they're barely getting any sunlight. i pulled one out due to me ripping it apart chasing aphids! @ savis sue - so why is the yellow pear insepid? i wouldn't mind getting rid of it, but my dd ladybug picked it, and it's the only plant fruiting at the moment - she'd kill me!! well, thanks for all the info you guys. i guess there's nothing left for me to do but to wait and see what mother nature does with me and my poor little patch! be well!

I am so sorry for your loss. First, you MUST report this to law enforcement immediately. Even if they tell you that you cannot press charges against this person(which I cannot imagine as he was guilty of trespassing at the very least), the law enforcement officers should make an 'information report' about the incident. Secondly, find out exactly what the law says where you live. I live in a rural area with no leash law, so dogs can run free as they please. HOWEVER, once a dog steps off its own property, it can be shot if it is a threat to any person or animal. Thus, in our area, your neighbor could have legally shot the dog on his property or even if it was on county property like in a roadway, but could not come onto your property and legally shoot it as he did. Third, in addition to reporting the incident to the police, report it to the humane society if your area has one. Fourth, consult an attorney about how to proceed in protecting your property from this person and his animals. In some jurisdictions you must clearly post No Trespassing signs. In others, you must mark your perimeter with a certain color of paint. You may have to send a "cease and desist" letter informing this person that criminal charges will be filed if he trespasses onto your property. You obviously need a fence to keep your animals home, and his animals out, and I realize that is a major expense. Consulting an attorney is also an expense, but you have a very difficult situation on your hands and need to be careful every step of the way to ensure you understand the law and comply with it yourself. It also will help establish firmly for you just what your legal rights are. Fifth, you need to inform this neighbor that the encroachment of his animals on to your property will no longer be tolerated. It is best to do this in writing. You will have to decide for yourself what steps to take if the animals come onto your property again. It is best to think about this and decide in advance what to do. That way you don't make a snap judgement in the heat of the moment that you might regret. I would find it almost impossible to even attempt to maintain a friendly relationship with someone who came onto my property and behaved as your neighbor did. I suspect it is time to worry less about getting along & being a good neighbor and time to worry more about protecting yourself, your family, your animals and your property. You know, a person who would kill an animal in front of its family on its own property might do just about anything. Be careful. Finally, if you want to forgive this person, fine. Do the Christian thing and forgive him if you can. BUT, do not forget! I suspect that a person like this, if he knows you have forgiven him, might do something similar in the future because he got away with it once. Again, my condolences for the loss of your beloved pet, and especially because you had to witness such a heinous event. I hope everything works out for you and your family.

There's not just the broken relationship with Dad ... but the complication of having resented brother, as favourite, while growing up ... but with a residue continuing over the years, which was involved with the request/demand that you forgive. Life does get complicated, doesn't it? I rather like the idea of the two chairs, inhabiting each in turn. Sometimes when I have an issue with God, I imagine myself stepping out of my skin, going a short distance away, looking back and asking what response I imagine that God would make. Though we're supposed to respect God unquestioningly, I've suggested to a number of folks that it's O.K. to have issues with God: He/((She) ain't eggs ... She/He won't break when given some rough handling. I hope that you can find/work your way through to a satisfactory resolution to this issue. I hope that you have a trusted friend who is hugely respectful, caring and willing to listen (and who knows how to keep her/his mouth shut not only during ...[ but after, with regard to others, as well]). Sometimes a leader or regular person of faith can be helpful in dealing with such an issue. Good wishes as you proceed on this portion of your life's journey. ole joyful

Hi Sussy,this is a cool experience! I want to have ducklings this spring too..but I don't know if I can keep all the babies. What do you do with them all? Can they live happily together even as adults? Or do you have to place them? hmmmm,I'm fairly new at this too:) your ducks are adorable!!

k.....our bathroom is now known as the brooder room. momma doesn't want the other duck to have em' but she doesn't want them either. took her all of 3minutes to forget about them and go on with her life.
hopefully when they are big enough, putting them back will not be another uncensored episode of "ducks gone wild".
also have a mare going to foal soon(new to that scene too)and our parrot has decided riding the sheppard/lab mix around would be cool, the dog thinks otherwise.

hubby looks like he could use a valium instead of lunch today, hehe

You need to get yourself a good book. Start with Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks by Dave Holderread. It's the best out there, and should answer all of your questions. You're making a lot of mistakes, and it'll save you a lot of frustration and heartache.

Every book I've found so far is geared towards production in one form or another. Most websites also. Easy to find general information about housing, feed and health. Raising ducklings is popular on google....harder to find, emptying their nest or teaching them to mother.
We moved to 10acres in tx from 1/4acre in nj and are very new to livestock, taking care of acreage and country living. Trying to be responsible and take it slow adding new animals, though it is tempting to load every square inch.Read all we can so we don't have all suffering guinea pig type animals instead of farm pets. Have actually had one of Holerread's books and resold it on ebay after these ducks were grown. Think it may have been one of the ones with duck recipes in the back. Is there such a thing as farm pets?
Any obvious mistakes we can fix now before more damage is done? They all seem content tonight, 3 grownups are nestled in and quiet and babes are eating/drinking here and there and not peeping constantly.
