Making a Sloped Bed

I am looking to create a 8 foot deep 20 foot wide bed with my kids school letters at their elementary school created from bushes. The roadway in front of the school is significantly elevated and I would ideally like to slope the bed upward gradually front to back to enable even better readability (the ground currently is completely level). In other words so the back bushes are elevated above the front - so the letters are easier to read.

How best to accomplish this? I would like to not use edge material if possible. If I build the topsoil up significantly with the slope and cover well with mulch will it hold its shape or will erosion be a problem?

That sounds like an interesting project, and something that kids will like.

Rainfall and winter temps can affect erosion, so it would help to know where you are located.

How much of a slope are you talking about? How high do you plan on raising the top of the bed?

What's on the other side of the top of the bed? If the ground is level and you raise one side of it, what will keep the top of the slope from falling onto whatever is beyond it? I think edging will be absolutely necessary at the top and sides.

I'm not sure how much slope you'll be able to achieve, even with edging (among other problems, the top of the bed will need more water, and the raised edges will be especially prone to drying out). One way to make the slope look higher than it actually is might be to trim the shrubs to different heights: the shrubs at the bottoms of the letters would be shorter, and those at the tops of the letters would be a few inches taller. (That's just a thought; I don't know if it would work.)

The best thing I know of to hold dirt in place is the roots of plants. One possibility to keep the background from washing away is to plant a very low groundcover in the non-letter areas. Ideally the groundcover should be a color that contrasts with the color of the shrubs that form the letters. There are many possibilities, but it depends what your climate is. How many letters will be in the sign, and what are the letters? If you've got any M's or W's, it could get interesting, especially if there are four letters -- and hopefully there aren't more than four letters -- though the junior highs I attended had 5- and 6-word names!

(I retired from a job where I made a jillion signs, both by hand and later with computers; I've also done needlework lettering on various strange projects. So this is bringing up a lot of memories....)

Thanks for all of the thoughts. Here are some answers to your questions.

Located in Richmond VA.
Just turf on the other side of the top of the bed.
Thinking gradual slope, but haven't really planned out how much.
Four letters - THES. Will be a lot of plants!

What kind of edging would you think that could be effective?

My yard slopes away from the house and it took me years to figure out what to do. First thing, if possible (and it may be too late in the game, since he's done the bones of the design before asking you), put a place to "be" at the bottom of the garden, even if it is just a bench, and way to get there. Besides the attraction of the destination, this gives the garden dimension and prevents you, and them, from seeing it as if it were a painting (especially not a painting lying on the ground). It is a space! Second, all the normal horizontal rules apply for, say, controlling view corridors or creating privacy with upright plants or plant canopies. You are not ONLY looking down on this area (though you can get pretty fixated on that), but also across and through it. So I guess this boils down to the fact that you needn't get bogged down by the slope. The space still has all its usual 3 dimensions. And if you create a way to walk through it, then you have all the usual opportunities to create pockets of close-up interest that, for example, rocks often provide. You can also do things that will look different from the bottom than from the top, so tucking a low plant under (behind) a tall one creates a totally different impact from below than from above. Mine are on a slight slope. What i did was build my frames out of 2x6,one 2x6 across the middle to keep them from bowing out and 4'x10' is the size of my frames. You have to stake them. I put 2x6 stakes in each corner, drove them in the ground like legs with a small sledge hammer and then raised the the frames to level on the legs and screwed them. then i filled in the bottom gaps on the steep side and angled sides with 2x 6 or whatever size i needed and screwed them to the stakes also. And your done...

hi moccasin, thanks for the feedback! I already created the flat moats around the hosta roots that Ken was talking about. I dug the hostas back into the slope, planted them flat and dug some rocks in above the soil line to shore up the area around the roots. I think they should hold although I plan to monitor. We have clay soil that clumps well, so I believe I mostly have to keep the soil intact until it's no longer fluffy. I was looking at hillside gardens in my area and they all seem pretty happy and healthy without terraces. We also have the dubious advantage of near-constant year round rainfall but very rarely driving rains such as you might see in the South. Important caveat: we always seem to have hot, dry weather for two weeks straight whenever I plant up a bed, so consult me if you're planning a beach vacation in Nova Scotia! I agree those shrubs need some help! None will look very good trimmed up, sadly. Eventually they will be replaced with Japanese maples and evergreens. They're not really blocking much light, they're just hiding my neighbour's house. Now if I could chop down my neighbour's giant maple that blocks the morning light...or my other neighbour's giant maple that blocks the evening light...but then I wouldn't have such good hosta conditions! I agree. Make something more permanent. Take yourself over to the hypertufa forum here, and learn how to make some step edges. It's a lightweight mix of concrete, perlite, and peat moss, looks fabulous, and I'd get a shallow box about the size of my step edge, line it with plastic, and make as many step edges as I want. I'd put the bottom step edge in place, add some nice potting soil mix, level out the step (or terrace), and put another step edge, and so on till I reached the top! That would be permanent and very lovely! There are You Tube videos on it also.
