Garden Paths - Dumb question but.....

Do you have to use bender board?

My husband and I have an acre and a half. We have been going against all the rules and designing as we go. Fun but risky. We are now at the point where we (he) is digging the paths in which we will first put weed barrier, then sand and finally pea gravel. We will have over 500 feet of pathway. The ground where we are is that red (very hard) brick like soil. What is the purpose of the board? It will be level with the ground if we use it so it won't hold the gravel in so is the purpose to keep the path from collapsing? We are on a tight budget so we save where we can and if this is an area where we can save that would be nice.

Thank you for the help

Sharon
