lawn drainage help much needed

I'm trying to drain water away from the foundation on the back of my house using the 4" perforated pipe. due to the size of my lawn, I cannot dig a trench that continues all the way down the lawn into the woods. I was planning on extending the trench about 12 feet from the foundation, and digging a hole, and burying the pipe in crushed rock. I'm not quite sure how to do this, meaning how deep do I need to dig my trench, how big should my hole that the trench runs into be? do I fill the hole with crushed rock? let's say I dug my trench about 16" down, how much deeper does my hole need to be? once the water in the hole comes up to be level with the end of the drainpipe, would additional crushed rock above it absorb the water, or would the water be unable to be absorbed any higher than the actual pipe? I don't understand how this all quite works or how to go about it. I don't want to waste crushed rock nor do I want to dig any deeper than necessary. Please help. thank you
