Small Yard Design

I live in Charlotte, NC about a mile from uptown. We live in an older neighborhood, but our house is part of an infill of 10 houses at the end of the street so our backyard is pretty plain and very small (50' deep by 20' wide). One of the other challenges is that we have a shared driveway. It can be pretty tight when backing out or having friends over. We thought about putting up a fence, but are worried we would back into it. We also have to pull cars onto the grass sometimes when we have guests.

The main objectives for our backyard are as follows:

1) Privacy

2) No (limited) maintenance

3) Play area for our 2 year old

4) Dog friendliness

We have considered putting in a deck or pavers. We also thought about putting in evergreens to help divide the side and backyard. We haven't moved forward with anything because we are just not sure what will be the the best route, and we also have trouble visualizing the finished product. Another issue is that we don't have a garage or a basement so we have limited storage. We have considered a small shed, but the other ones in the neigborhood don't seem to "fit" in with the design of the house. They also seem to take up too much of the yard and become the "main attraction."

We have a small garden that we would like to keep in some capacity. It does not have to be the same location. We mainly plant tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and some herbs.
