Where to buy a Lemon or Lime?

Hello everybody. I would like to know where in Massachusetts I could purchase either a lime and or lemon tree? It's not necessary I get it now. My wife decided it would be a good idea to have one or the other or both.

I even spoke to them over this issue. The guy at Lowe's told me that I was wrong and they need watering. He said he lost a bunch because of drying out. I know and you know it was because of over water then no water and was too late. Good for you Laura. Stush

Here is the recipe for Tangy Lime Chicken 8 chicken thighs - boneless, skinless 2 lemons juiced 2 limes juiced (I often use the zest) 1 garlic clove minced or pressed 1/4 tsp dried thyme - I often used fresh from my garden 1/8 tsp dried oregano 1/8 tsp pepper 1/3 cup white wine (I have used chicken broth) 1 tbsp butter or margarine (I use 2 tbsp butter) In large bowl or plastic ziploc mix together the juices, garlic, thyme, pepper, oregano and wine. Add chicken and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Remove chicken from marinade and arrange in large baking pan in a single layer then pour marinade over chicken pieces. Dot with butter and bake at 425F for 40 minutes basting every 10 minutes with pan juices. To serve arrange chicken pieces on platter and spoon pan juices over top, garnish with lemon and lime twist Serves 4 I serve this with rice or buttered egg noodles and asparagus. Sometimes I have added a tiny bit of cornstarch or Wondra type flour to the pan juices to make them a touch thicker

I'll definitely call Minute Maid. I think their frozen juice products are great although I haven't bought them recently so didn't realize the lime juice had been discontinued. It seems like whenever I find a product I really, really like - it gets discontinued. I think Snapple may be discontinuing their Diet Raspberry Tea and DH and I are not happy about it. If we stick together as consumers and let manufacturers know what we like, maybe they will think twice before discontinuing items.

Carefully re-pot in a larger pot, using a mixture of 1/3 MiracleGro Vegetable Mix, 1/3 small bark chips, and 1/3 perlite. Try to remove as much of the heavy soil as you can, without damaging the fragile feeder roots. Provide about a 1/4 cup Osmocote Plus (must be the "Plus" formulation) which is a slow release fertilizer. Water well. Provide lots of sun. Fertilize with 1/2 strength Foliage Pro after a watering (water once the soil feels dry) twice a month until you see new flush. Then switch to full strength. Never apply fertilizer on dry roots, always water first, then fertilize. Watch for pests (scale, spider mites, aphids), as they can take advantage of a stressed plant, and treat accordingly. Patty S.

I would only buy a citrus grown by Four Winds Growers, located here in northern California. They are available here in the better retail nurseries and I think they sell direct on line. They are on a true dwarfing rootstock and bear at an early age. Al

In my area, anywhere that sells a good selection of houseplants - most nurseries and garden centers - offers citrus plants. I've even seen them pretty regularly at the box stores. January tends to be a big houseplant month around here but not sure if that translates equally to the east coast :-)

As to bearing at a young age, Meyer lemons do so without any need for dwarfing rootstock. I've seen 1G plants laden with blossoms and small fruits and they don't get too much younger than these babies!

Don..Where do you live?

Is it by the Worchester area?

I do warn you though..If you are looking for a tree this time of the year, any you buy locally could be infested with pests....
I have never bought a citrus tree in the area without pests this time of year, therefore I always wait till spring when fresh plants are delivered and when it is easier to deal with them outdoors if so..
i checked three local area's for sales on citrus for my sister who was persistant about me getting her a few, and they all had either mealy or scale. They were on 3 dollars off to boots..Disgusting..The mealy was so obvious, it just suprises me that they could rightly sell these things in good faith to unsuspecting customers..

I can always share one of mine with you too..They are clean. Just e-mail me..

Josh and Jojo are right..I also frquent Logee's which is only 45 minutes from you..A beautiful place to visit. A place you will not want to leaves once you are inside.

Don Logees sells smaller citrus lemon trees as starters from 11.00 - 30.00 you can get bigger ones from them but it comes at a bigger price, as they propagate on site just about everything they offer/sell in the citrus and other plant areas. Also free re-potting at the store for all there walk in patrons would dismiss (by many of my own experiences there) any bug concerns you may have. Yep you have to go there someday if for anything just to see the stuff.

Yet I would also say Mike may have the better deal for you with a wait and I surly don't want to take his offer away but MIKE we can if wanted also shuttle that lemon/lime plant to Don after all Don is a hop.... skip and a( Whats that word again?) from my door.... I know he knows where the 146 I-90 Rte 20 park and ride is and I wouldn't have a problem meting him there.

I found a place last year that's perfect for mail order citrus. They have nice plants and far cheaper than any other place out there. Just google almostedenplants. I'd recommend trying the variegated eureka lemon. The leaves, when crushed, have a lovely lemon scent. New growth comes out pink, and I haven't had many problems with it, even when it was blown out of its pot in a storm.

OK Mike -- You've confirmed my guess that not all other areas feature houseplants in winter :-) Pests could indeed be an issue if the plants have been hanging out for awhile.....citrus seems to attract them like bees to honey! However, this area gets fresh stock in straight from SoCal for the big January houseplant push and the plants are clean and healthy. Maybe not the case elsewhere....

And I've been around, just quiet :-) I let you and Al and the others do all the work!

Good advise Mike. With all my,knock on wood,pest free orchids etc. bringing something new into my plant room might just stir things up. Waiting until spring sounds good to me. Thanks. And yes I do live in Worcester right by Holy Cross College.
