What animal could this be!?!?!

Looks like something ate all the tops of my peas and tops of my cabbage. In total two pacakges of peas worth and 2 cabbages (so quite a bit). It was done in one or two nights (or at least not when I saw it in the day). I also found droppings kind of like a dogs but with lots of vegetative matter in it.

I am outside washington DC and do have a "forest" behind my yard.

What could this be???

I was going to say deer until I saw the part about the droppings. Do you have Elk around?

I was going to say rabbit until you described the scat. What about groundhogs or raccoons? I'm not familiar with their poop though. My in-laws used to live in that area and had a lot of trouble with deer.

Spray them with a repellent. Boxwood are not really liked by any varmints, but young deer sometimes try new plants that they are unfamiliar with. I've actually seen the bitten off part lying on the ground where the deer spit it out. Once they repellent wears off, it's unlikely you'll ever have to spray it again.

Thanks for your responses.. I could not see the color or more details as it was dark. I noticed because my neighbor has a movement sensor light and I saw it on... but the animal was already moving out of it. I guess it could be the bobcat, hopefully I could see it again another time. I am new to this area... and yep I have seen a good number of new (new to me) animals... Thanks :)

Deer are famous for peeling off the bark from tender young trees. Is your area rural? Whatever it is you may need to buy a tree guard. Christine

Who is digging holes next to my house

The first hole is less than 12 inches. The second hole is large like 24 inch or so. I have stuffed paper in each and notice that it wasn't disturbed. I am thinking that if they were used before, they are used no longer. Actually I remember a stinky smell coming from the bush next to the hole. The smell isn't there any more. The smaller 12 inch hole is probably the right size for a chipmunk, but they are quite rare. I only see one about once a year and they don't stick around. There may be foxes in my area, but I have never seen one. Coyotes are not uncommon, but they don't fit into the holes. Paul

uggg - it's a grond hog. We have a fence we are going to try chicken wire under the places where the fence does not touch the ground all the way....

Bend the chicken wire LENGTHWISE and wire it to the fence with the bottom of the L sticking outward. Most animals try to dig through the wire and can't figure out that if they backed away they could get under.

Perfect - I will try that - Also easier then digging down into my somewhat rocky soil.

We have tons of critters in south Louisiana to deal with - armadillos, moles, oppossums, deer, rabbit, squirrel, skunks, an assortment of birds, and tons of bugs. I even have an occasional snake that gets caught in the bird netting. But groundhogs are not on my list of critter issues. Thank God. Perhaps those in the northern part of the state might have to deal with this problem. Hope the chicken wire solution works...
