Asparagus crowns did not survive the winter

Any upper-midwest asparagus gardeners willing to help me troubleshoot what killed my crowns?

Last year a prepared an asparagus bed for the first time and planted 20 Jersey Knight crowns. They all put up shoots and seemed to grow into decent sized plants despite the horrible summer drought. I did not harvest them last year, just cut back the "ferns" in the fall. Come spring I wait and wait and no shoots.

Now that it's far past time for them to come up, I dug up two of the crowns and they are just plain dead. No noticeable marks or growths, just soft and stringy and half-composted.

More about the bed:

Neutral ph, silty black soil
Part-sun to part-shade
Generally well-drained, but there was ice on part of the bed part of the winter.
Crowns when I dug them up were not a deep as I remember planting, only about 3 inches below surface (the soil here tends to seek its own level, can't really "hill" anything)
