My first Gritty Mix......need suggestions. (pic)
Comments (8)First, that's a pretty little seedling, good luck! The seedling has tiny shallow roots and the top layer of gritty mix does dry quickly, how are you checking the moisture level? I have no experience with seelings, but I do screen turface and granite at 1/16" through 3/8" (can probably use 1/4")....See MoreMy first Gritty Mix and screening (how-to pics)
Comments (16)Hello! I hope this isn't rude to piggyback, but I just had a couple questions about the screen size. I thought in the original direx for gritty mix, it said this (I'm not putting in the bits about fertilizer, just the particle stuff): "1 part uncomposted screened pine or fir bark (1/8-1/4") 1 part screened Turface 1 part crushed Gran-I-Grit (grower size) or #2 cherrystone" Now, did that mean that we want all 3 ingredients to be between 1/8 and 1/4 inch? Or are there different sizes for the other 2 ingredients? Because somewhere on one of these threads, someone asked if it should be screened so that you have "1/8" screen for grit and Turface and 1/4 for the pine bark?" Which confused the heck out of me. We want them around the same size, I thought. Again, apologies if this is rude. It's just that every time I think I'm getting close, I realize there's some other really important and complicated aspect I don't understand. Once I get this particle size business down, I'm going to go with some sort of bark/DE thing, and just hope for the best. (At least, I think that's what I'll do. Can't have a heavy mix. Need lots of water retention.) Well, I hope this wasn't obnoxious. These screen how-tos are fantastic!!! I had thought it would be too hard but this makes it seem doable. So, thank you!!!...See MoreDecember pictures of my plants in the gritty and 5.1.1mixes..
Comments (30)Mike: Fantsastic looking plants! I am so glad you decided to go with the 5.1.1 mix:-). You have come a long way with your plants..Just wonderful. Let us know when would love to use a mix that last's a lot longer than that, and we will get hooked on the gritty mix..:-)Nice lights too. Jodik and Al: I appreciate your vote of confidence in me..That means alot expecially coming from the very ones that helped me every step of the way and especially the one that introduced this concept and mix to me in the first place, Al:0) By the way, Sissy say's "right back at you".. Thank you! Josh: Thank you for your input while I was sick. Your right, and I figure if anyone is really interested in what coir has done for my plants, let alone see pictures, all they would have to do is plug my name into the search field and they can see my journet from begining till recent. Comments (16)Hi Westy, hi Brenda- I am in a pinch for time today, but I will tell you where I got my ingredients really quick so you can get started! Bark Fines- Just plain ol Repti bark from Petco. I had to get the smaller bag because they were sold out of the larger ones. There has been talk that they may be using different sized bark partials in the two size bags, but I only have experience with the smaller bag. Granite- De Youngs Farm & Garden (Right next door to Molbaks in Woodenville). This was the only place I could find the exact size granite I was looking for. Turface- Ewing Irrigation. I picked up mine in Auburn. They also have locations in Burlington, Pasco, Everett, Redmond, Tacoma and Tumwater/Olympia. (You can search locations at their web site- www.ewing1.com) Seeing how we are coming up on baseball season they will be sure to have it in stock. *In a pinch I have been told you can use Floor Dry #8822 from Napa (the automotive store), but I have not tried it yet. If you search my name (Jessicasgrowincitrus) you will come across all my posts. I wrote up a whole post on my Gritty Mix making experience last summer. (Titled: Al's Gritty Mix -- A Learning Experience) Check it out, there are step-by-step photos of the whole sifting process and photos of the partial size you will need in the end product. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck!! ~Jessica...See Moregreenman28 NorCal 7b/8a
