Hi Tabithawc! It almost sounds as if your leaves may have sunburn. I would maybe move it indoors to a sunny window for a bit- East if you can, and then as it heals, perhaps acclimate it to the sun by putting it out in the morning sun (East) and then gradually getting it used to stronger sun- Western. Once it heals it should be able to handle full sun. It sounds like the plant needs a little coddling. I wish you luck! Jen

Your tree does not have a zinc or manganese deficiency. Neither leaf that you pictured is consistent with those deficiencies. Further none of the other leaves on the tree demonstrate a similar problem. The tree might be slow but is certainly not stuck. I can see that the tree has recently had a small flush of new leaves(not many but a few can be seen in the picture). When was the last time that the container has been flushed with clear water? A container should be flushed at least twice a year. Citrus absorb nutrients in a 5-1-3 ratio. The two fertilizers that you have been using is no where close to that ratio. For every 5 unites of nitrogen that a citrus tree absorbs it will only absorb 1 unit of phosphorus. As you can see both of your fertilizers are supplying way to much phosphorus, which will are of course piling up in the container with each fertilizer application. You need to flush the container and start using a proper fertilizer for citrus. The two pictured leaves just look like old leaves that have come to their end.

Ariel, I see no one has responded, so I'll try to jump in, here. First, check your tree to see if you have any bugs of any kind. It looks to me like an injury, either mechanical, or possibly from an insect infection. The insects that can cause this sort of injury are sucking insects - aphids, scale, wooly aphids. I don't see anything obvious like that in your photos, but check the undersides of your leaves. Also, check that branch where it branches off the trunk, and look for a mechanical injury. Yes, your tree is chlorotic. You need to fertilize your Meyer frequently, and yes, cooler weather can affect nutrient uptake in our neck of the woods, based on our water having a little bit higher pH (not bad, but sometimes just enough that the pH in combination with colder temps can lock out the uptake of Manganese 1st, and then Iron, 2nd.) So, be sure to fertilize your tree regularly. I like to use DynaGro's Foliage Pro, 1/2 strength in the winter, then full strength in the summer. I also use a slow release fertilizer as well. I used to use Osmocote's product, but it has been discontinued. I would suggest Dynamite's slow release fertilizer, the one formulated for citrus, all-purpose or all-purpose select (whichever has the best spread of micronutrients). Patty S.

Almost any container grower who's been around the fora for a while and is trying to improve their game understands very clearly that over-watering causes the hypoxia (lack of oxygen) that eventually causes root issues. If we wanted to parse words and start looking at plants at the cellular or molecular level, we could find a number of causes subsequent to hypoxia that could be labeled as causal, such that they would displace lack of oxygen as the cause of root death. If all free oxygen could suddenly be removed from the soil, the roots would still have access to the oxygen within root tissues and the oxygen dissolved in water. Kozlowski and Pallardy in "Growth Control in Woody Plants" list Citrus as moderately resistant to inundation (flooding). This means that roots don't die within minutes of the oxygen supply being cut off is clear evidence that root death is a process, so the actual cause of death when free oxygen is removed would not be the absence of free oxygen. Lack of oxygen causes cellular dysfunction, which leads to other factors at the cellular level that cause loss of viability. You can look at what I said in 2 ways, you can say, "Hmm - he has a point"; or, you can say he's full of it and grasping for straws, basing his argument on a technicality. Which way you look at it doesn't matter to me. The reason is, if you think I'm full of it for what I said, you need to consider the fact that Silica's position is exactly the same. I wouldn't be doing anything she hasn't done. She named a secondary effect and made it the primary cause. Would it not make much more sense to either really enlighten us and explain what happens at the cellular level as roots slowly die, also siting tertiary, quaternary ..... causes until you arrive at the site of cellular death; or, would it make more sense to stick with the primary cause of hypoxia, which is resultant of over-watering. Having too much air in the soil isn't the cause of under-watering, but you sure can end up with too little air in the soil by over-watering. Assuming you're using a medium appropriate for conventional container culture, can anyone name a cause, the effect of which would be too little air in the soil, other than over-watering? What has occurred is, one person decided to rephrase a concept that is a foundational underpinning of growing well in containers, that is known by millions and millions of growers and clearly understood, and rephrased it in such a way that it's contentious. Intentionally confusing cause and effect as support for any argument is a pretty clear indication of the tenuous nature of the claim. Al
