Hi Edie........I've never fertilized the cucumbers. Maybe that's the problem. What kind of fertilizer to they need?They are outside for the bees to come around. I think I do have flowers without little cucumbers attached. I have 5 plants in a large pot. One plant was started inside and did OK for the transplant. The others were put in later. It's the transplanted one that's having the problem. It is the biggest of course. I've been removing the sickly looking leaves from the tomatoes. I'm not getting many flowers. I have Roma and Cherry. I think it's the Roma that have a few small fruits now. They are also in a container. I'm concerned that I've put too many plants in the container. I think there are 3 roma and 3 cherry in there. The container is 1.5 to 2 feet diameter and about as tall. I'm also concerned I have been watering the cucumbers too much. I thought they needed lots of water. The tomatoes get less water. Every day or two I water the cukes if there has been no rain. Not as much for the tomatoes. Thanks for your response Edie. Every little bit of help is good for me. I haven't had a yard for years so this is the first year I've tried to plant. My seedlings got pretty leggy due to lack of light I think. I got a light for them after they were well underway. I'll know better next year and start everything with a light from the beginning.

If cutworms are your problem you should put a plastic collar around the remainging lettuce plants. I use a plastic 2 liter bottle cut in half to make 2 collars. Cut off the top and bottom, then cut in half to make 2 cylinders which each are about 4 inches tall. A sharp, thin blade, non-serrated knife works the best. Cutworms are very difficult to find in the daytime. There is no telling how far from the plant, which direction, and how deep they are. It takes a while to sift throught the dirt but if you are persistent then most times (but not always) you can EVENTUALLY find them.

Hi Anney, Our Diva's were slow starting, probably because of the cool May temps we had. But once they started, they really grew fast. They are already over the 6 Ft. trellis also, and they branch out all over also. I think you should see some cucumbers maturing soon. Bdobs, thanks for posting the photos. The first one shows the "striping" I mentioned. We did taste the smaller ones as mentioned and it's worth waiting for them to get larger before harvesting. Again, just my opinion.

No, I haven't given up on my attempt to have cucumbers this year. Feeling a bit discouraged, but my Lemon Cucumber and Homegrown Pickles seedlings are still surviving, and I have purchased and planted cucumber starts of Straight Eight, Boston Pickles and Burpless Cucumbers. Nothing is bothering the larger plants and yesterday I put up some caging around the seedlings and put up my "scary CDs" in hopes of protecting them. The only "caging" material I had available, unfortunately, was some rabbit fencing and ornamental wire fencing - rather large openings I am afraid, especially if the finches here are the culprit as they are for you, ! We have House Finches, and they are small enough that I imagine they will find their way through my "barricades" easily if they are determined enough - perhaps the fencing will look dangerous and discourage them! I have never seen this sort of damage before, either, Skybird. and still have no idea why birds would have any interest in pecking at cucumber seedling leaves, mostly without eating them. Thus far I have been unable to catch anything in the act, but since maxinmontrose has actually observed birds doing similar damage to the leaves of his pea plants, I think it is probably birds here, too. Birds are part of a healthy environment and I do what I can to encourage them to be in my yard and gardens. I have bird feeders and birdbaths set up, grow sunflowers and other plants to attract them. I enjoy watching and hearing the birds, even though most of the ones visiting this part of Denver are probably considered common and boring. An added benefit, of course, is that many of them eat the bugs that bother our plants the most - even House Finches, supposed vegetarians that they are, eat the occasional aphid. I can live with this destructive behavior, as long as it is only the cucumber seedlings that attract them! I can't deny a fellow creature her or his need for salad - who doesn't like salads?!? Holly
