Hi! I am a newbee who started potatoes in planters because they sprouted in my cupboard. I live in Georgia where the ground is clay and hard, so I used large planters and placed 2 sprouted potatoes in each one. I planted them 2 months ago and the plants grew fast! I used potting soil and plant food in my watering, but I've noticed lately that the plants started drooping and turning a lite green to yellowish. Because the leaves were flourishing, I kept watering, but today, I noticed ants on one of my plants. I decided to empty that particular planter to see what was happening and to my surprise, there were no potatoes or tubers! I decided to get online and ask why, and discovered your discussion thread....I did watch a YouTube video of a woman growing potatoes in large planters, but they said nothing of the growing season, preferred weather, potting mix vs soil, heat in containers and preferred cool season, etc. It seems as though I need to try again...should that be in the Spring? March? Should I toss all of the soil I was using? I need some help! Thanks for the comments you've already made and I look forward to further discussion!

Sammy, I'm taking it ez on the gardening although I have planted a few roses. I finally got my first gallica, Belle sans Flatterie. I planted a couple of climbers, well five anyway. I can't figure out what kind of look the front yard needs. If I had my way I'd plop what I wanted where I wanted with the idea of creating a thicket that pleased me. Carla, I left out the part about sitting on the couch eating pie when I suddenly realized there was sour cream in the fridge. It was all over then. Hopeless. Morz and Diane: regarding the Mayan--it has cinnamon and fudge swirls in it. I'm a chocoholic and it takes a lot to impress me. I took one bite and knew it was special. Patrick, it's been a long time since I fried a chicken; it sounds like it was over the top. There's nothing like a flour gravy when it's done right; it's so simple and so easy to mess up but so good when it's right. I usually stick to frying pork chops and I haven't even done that in eons. Making markers for containers is tedious - I do it while watching TV and I have them ready and labeled before sowing. Lee Valley sells a marking pen that lasts through all kinds of weather. I do a kind of 'reduced HOS' by sowing very small seeds with 'seed spoons' (don't remember where I got them). You can easily spread them so thin that a hunk may consist of only 2 or 3 plants. Seems more humane. Northerner.

Sorry, I misunderstood. However, I think it might be interesting to try. I'd microwave-bake the potatoes first. My husband really likes Greek stuffed peppers. But doesn't care for stuffed eggplant or zucchini. I don't either although I usually love eggplant & squash. I think it's because the vegetables get kind of smushy in the cooking. The rice takes so long. The potatoes would hold up better. You've given me a good idea. I bought a 5 lb. bag of russets last week and was wondering what to do with them. I could stuff them or just do what you did, wedges, but with the traditional yemeste filling surrounding them. Sounds good to me! I understand about helpers in the kitchen. My mom was famous for standing right next to you while you were trying to cook. So any time she "helped," I spent a lot of time asking her to move. One time my son was trying to make a cake and was using our big Pyrex mixing bowl. I heard a crash and went into the kitchen to investigate. Just as I was getting ready to chew him out for breaking the bowl, he looked up and said, "Grandma was helping me." Then I knew what had happened. She had moved closer & closer to him, but he didn't have the courage to ask her to stay put. So as he sidled out of her way to get some room to work, the bowl eventually slid off the counter. I understood completely and couldn't blame him at all. We still laugh about that incident to this day.
