Wow, love2gardennc, I did not know you posted here. GW must be having some issues there. I'm interested in a trade. The Cornus mas seeds that I have are from fruit that I collected myself from very productive plants. The fruit is very tasty and after putting it through the food mill I did make a bunch of goodies from the clean pulp. Now I have a ton of seeds that I cleaned and dried. Hi All, I have a huge request and don't know if it's possible. I loooove cornelian cherry fruit and haven't had it in 5 years since I moved to Florida. I was wondering if anyone has the tree and is willing to sell me the fruit and mail it to me... at any price, you name it... This is a gorgeous tree in the early spring, and I really like the form. You are lucky to have it. I worked at a place that had one outside my building as a landscape specimen. I never saw any berries. Dogwoods seem to have boom and bust years, and not every other either. I have never seen anything in the way of berries. I debated about planting this in my yard, but I figured I wouldn't get a harvest. I didn't think about using it for pectin and mixing with other fruits! Great report Co!

After recently buying a holiday home on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast I found two unknown [to me] fruit trees in the garden. The fruits were purplish-red in one case and yellow in the other. Locals said the red fruits were called 'Drenki', and that they were very good for your health. Further research revealed that they were varieties of the Cornelian Cherry. They were both acceptable to eat, though the 'Drenki' were a little sour unless completely ripened. ps. 'Cornus' was Latin for 'Horn', synonymous with 'hard', supposedly from the hardness of the wood. The Hornbeam tree has a similar etymology. pps. We Brits call Dogwoods, 'Dogwoods'.
