Specimen Tree?

I was wondering if you could suggest a nice, Zone 5 friendly specimen tree for the area I have enclosed below, which is a small planting area in the front of our house. If you look closely, you can see where the concrete ends, and that there is a area to the left of the window where a small tree could go without totally blocking the window. Our soil is more alkaline side and the summers here are fairly long and hot, but we will have drip irrigation to this area.

We were also planning to place two Ilex crenata in the back corners of this space, against the house. The nursery also suggested Spirea japonica in front of the window (but I am concerned about the smell, which I heard wasn't great) with Achnatherium calamagrostis and Daphne in front of that and some Thymus, Dicentra, and Lamb's Ears along the front border.

The original plan was for a Japanese maple as the specimen tree, which is ok, but... well... I'm a bit concerned because they are so overdone.

Thanks!
