Tree suggestion for front yard specimen
Comments (6)I would highly recommend the paperbark maple. I have one and it's grown quite rapidly. It's only six years old and the trunk on it (it's best feature) is huge. In my area, the fall color can be disappointing because it's the very last tree (later than the oaks!) to change colors and sometimes the frosts zap it before it can change. When it does have time to change, it puts on quite the show. The leaves are a fiery scarlet. I like the leaves on it too. They are somewhat unique and very dark green in the summer. They contrast the copper-colored bark really well. It's really cool when the sun shines through the peeling bark on the tree. It looks like the whole trunk is glowing. I've been thinking about getting another one of these trees because I like the one I have so much....See MoreIdeas for a specimen tree or shrub?
Comments (25)Yes, the Tropicana is the one I've fallen for! I know canna spread &/or multiply--do you over what period of time? (Trying to decide how many bulbs will make a healthy cluster w/out creating a future monster like my dahlias evolved into :). I'll check Sunset. I *adore* the Echium gentianoides and it would look stunning in front of the canna. It's the same color as the trim of the house (see link below--a old incarnation of one relevant bed, and the white is now repainted blue). The Tropicana canna would be beautiful with the echium in front of it, and something smaller to contrast with the echium at the stones. I also like the agapanthus Elaine--there are others in the garden which bloom normal lavender. The Verbena bonariensis would mix nicely in a center bed which has many variegated iris there for the beauty of their foliage; but their fairly inconsequential yellow flowers fade quickly, and the Verbena could incorporate and make a nice textural contrast which echos the canna/echium combo. Here is a link that might be useful: French blue house trim and bed......See MoreNeed specimen shrub/tree recommendation
Comments (7)How about a hydrangea paniculata standard? That would compliment the hydrangea bushes you already have. Are you sure you want to plant anything in that spot with snow piling on in winter? You might have the same problem with snow breaking branches on any small bush/tree. Perhaps move tree/bush to other side? For other seasons' height you could put an obelisk there and plant a couple of type 3 clematis. Some viticellas bloom all summer/fall ie 'Madame Julia de Correvon'. 'Betty Corning' has smaller flowers with a light fragrance (rare for clematis). I cut my type 3 clematis back to the ground after foliage dies back from frost. The obelisk could be kept in place for winter sculpture or removed and replaced in the spring. Or, you could place a large ceramic container there which matches your shutter color and swap out plants for spring/summer/fall/ winter interest. Or a grouping of several pots in different sizes. Knowing what is growing in the raised bed would be helpful....See Moregood price/specimen for zone 7a?
Comments (11)in my MI ... the biggest problem is the forced air furnace.. and the inability to keep humidity in a good range .... you cant dry it out.. and then throw it outdoors ... i dont recall how long i had then in the house .... but i was able to close off the living room for the house.. closed the vents.. and kept a window cracked ... that helped with temp and humidity ... in my potential ground freeze .. i had the holes predug ... and filled with bags of leaves ... so that after .... i could drag them outside.. throw them in the hole ... and use the leaves to heal them in.. they were properly planted in spring .... they were also BB in pots to make them easy to move around ... the bottom line here ... how much is a cut xmas tree??... if its say.. 50 ... then you are just risking what.. an extra 30 or 40??? after years of killing conifers.. lol .. i would never buy a tree that size.. at whatever price .... killed too many of them.. and not by bringing them indoors ... i would fear that huge tree in that rather small pot.. would have severe circling roots ... aww jeez.. just do it.. it will be a story for the ages .. whether it lives or not ... memories.... ken...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
