Buy some fly tape at your local hardware store. Cut a couple 1" square pieces from the fly tape and put on surface of the soil. This will catch some. They're hard to completely eliminate but you can reduce their numbers. Be mindful not to overwater.

You might want to try some neem oil. Find it at a garden store or order it on the internet. I like Dyna-Grow. Mix according to instructions and spray all over your plants until they are soaked. Water with it as well. The gnats lay eggs in the soil, the eggs hatch and the gnat larvae eat the plant roots. The neem should help control the larvae and it will shine the plant's leaves as well.

Try these things and let us know how you stand in a week or two. The good thing about the sticky fly tape is that you can monitor how many gnats you have.

Good luck and be careful about cutting the sticky tape. Use old scissors and try not to get it on your fingers. It isn't toxic, but it is ridiculously sticky and difficult to remove. Try alcohol or some M-30 found in the laundry isle.

It is also easy enough to apply a bit of hydrogen peroxide or bleach in some water and soak the plants for about 20 minutes or so and then rinse well. This kills larvae and allows the others to leave. The best proportions are about a teaspoon of one to a quart of water.

Gnats and small flies are caused by too much moisture and warmth. Keep the pots aerated well and a bit more on the dry side. Most people water plants too much anyhow.

I think I have some Gnats. I have seem them flying around my plants. They seem to live in the soil. Wonder how they got there. They are very small and now I saw some much smaller ones. Maybe hatchlings? Don't seem to bother or eat anything yet. I might try the peroxide thing. It won't hurt my plants will it hopflower? They are in my passiflora, jasmine, sweet olive, and night jasmine. My soil is very fast draining. One part turface, one part bb to half bb size sharp sand, and one part spruce bark. filix

I keep a mosquito dunk in my watering can.
After a couple of waterings, the gnats are gone.

I'm not sure what these little things are. But I bought some of that dunk gunk. I added about 1/4 of a ring to my watering can. How longwill that piece last? I was going to wait for the plants to dry out, then hit them with it. I put about 1 inch deep of pool filter sand on top of all my pots. Even though my soil is very fast draining. filix, let the dunk float overnight, or at least several hours, before using the water. Intermittent wetting and drying of the dunk doesn't alter its effectiveness....that piece is going to last for a long time, for several waterings.

Use the mosquito dunk water at least three consecutive times on your normal watering schedule - that should take care of your gnats.
