Perogola Post Options
Comments (6)If you check the manufacturer specs on the brackets, you'll see that they are specifically not intended or approved for a free standing structure. They simply do not have the mechanical strength that's needed to comply with codes concerning resistance to lateral forces. They are generally only approved for use with a structure that is attached to something else, like a house. I know a lot of people use them for things like fences and pergolas, and it may seem logical, but it's not ok. You should have no problem with pressure treated posts in concrete...if they're installed properly. That means that you fill the bottom of the hole with about 4" of gravel for drainage, rest the bottom of the post on top of the gravel, and pour the concrete so that the sides of the post are encased, but not the bottom. This will be a much stronger construction, and allow you to do stuff like have a swing without the structure loosening up or leaning over time....See MoreNeed vine options in Nort Texas for pergola
Comments (0)We just finished a cedar pergola in our back yard over a portion of our patio and would like to plant vines on it. I have already searched and read about 15 posts on this site and can't seem to find what I would like. The dimensions of the pergola are 14'x14'x9' tall. The slats across the top are 1"x1" and are 12" apart. Ideally the vines would wind around the 6"x6" posts and interweave the 1"x1"s across the top. Here are a list of "have to haves" and "nice to haves". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have-to-haves: 1) bee-free 2) evergreen 3) low maintainance 4) no suckers Nice-to-have: 1) fast-growing 2) color 3) moderate pruning at most Thank for your help!...See MoreBest cost effective option for building a pergola?
Comments (3)Unless there will be contact with concrete or soil, just use regular construction lumber. That will not show as really smooth wood under the paint, however. It will be the least expensive. Oh, primer before paint....See MorePergola: PT Pine Posts, Cedar Rafters?
Comments (1)Makes sense to me. Frankly, people have been making entire pergolas with treated pine for a very long time. Not recommending it, just saying, don't get overly concerned about cedar everywhere especially if painting or staining....See Morejake
