Okra: How long does it take to produce?

hiya all

Just wondering how long does it take for okra to produce? I started them indoors at the same time as the tomatoes...wow...they re ever so leggy right now! I will probably be able to put them out in another 2 weeks...we re still having frost now.

I ve read here that they can get to 8ft tall!! That s amazing...I ve never grown them before and was expecting that they d get to the same height as tomatoes! That would have been a shock!

Mine is currently 6ft tall and 3 moths old and producing already. Then again I am in WPB in FL.

I just got my okra seeds in the ground yesterday, and I should have them by mid to late july. I have never heard of anyone starting okra in pots;let us know if they transplant well.

The question is 'how long does it take basil to produce seed', not 'how long does basil to produce basil from seed'. We don't know where the poster lives but I would have thought that it was too late to sow basil and expect flowers and seeds this year unless they are to be grown in an area with very warm and sunny winters. I can't see you getting seeding plants before November but you have nothing to lose by trying.

photo? Not sure what you are referring to as a seed pod. These trees make hanging inflorescences, which eventually develop into a huge number of red fruits, which have a single seed inside each one nearly as large as the fruit (entire fruit is a little smaller than your typical marble). If you peel away the thin soft layer of fruit, you will find what is the seed pod inside (a small, spherical brown nut) and inside that is the seed. These pods do NOT open on their own- they germinate from within the pods (or sometimes in an animal's gut). Usually there are many many hundreds of fruits per inflorescence. So not sure what you are referring to when you say you see two seed pods.....?

I bought it as a tiny plant at the start of May, it's now the end of September, so that's around 150 days. If they will eventually ripen then that's great. I thought perhaps that's as far as they would get! I'm sure it's just not warm and sunny enough in this country to be ideal conditions.

Time of maturity depends (along with weather conditions)
upon variety of seeds.Annie Oakley will mature in 45 days where as Clemson spineless will mature in 54 days.In cold weather conditions it may take few days more to mature.Height and spread variations also will depend upon weather conditions.I have read many postings reporting a height of 8'.Here in MD I have seen okras reaching to height of 6'.
I have seen one nursery selling okra plants.
Lack of heat, light and moisture ( which is difficult to maintain in house) will make plants leggy.

Last year and this year both were around 55 days or so from seed direct sown. Grew Clemson Spineless last year and the plants were easily 10 ft tall
