Did I buy plants too soon?

I went and bought veggie plants last night, thinking the cold weather was finished enough. Well, the forcast has changed and it's supposed to get down to 43 degrees monday night! Should I hold off planting and bring them indoors? I have tomatoes, yellow peppers, and zuchini.

Hi Leisa,
They need to be hardened off anyhow, so I would just keep them in a protected area right next to your house. Do you have a porch? I like to harden mine off for about 7-10 days before planting. I protect them at night (on the porch, close to the house), but put them out in the sun during the day. I think they'll be fine, once they are hardened off.

Cool - thanks. I'm hoping they were hardened off at Home Depot :)

I do have a little porch I can set them on...

They should germinate when sunlight, moisture and soil temperature combine to trigger germination as long as they haven't been eaten by critters, blown away by wind or washed away by heavy rain. I grow perennials from seed via winter sowing to protect them from predators and bad weather. There is a winter sowing forum here on GardenWeb where you can find out more about the method. Hey, City Girl, What you have there are ornamental gourds. Its ok that you have harvested them already. They are only meant for a season, and you might as well start enjoying them in your autumn decorations. Jan

Agree. It isn't a question of picking too soon but maybe using too soon. Any tomato including Roma can be picked anytime after it blushes and it will finish ripening inside. Many of us do this routinely - pick at blush - and it is discussed in great detail on the Tomatoes forum. It eliminates the cracking, bug damage, and disease exposure problems. But then you do have to let them ripen fully inside before using them. But I find that Romas tend to be difficult to peel anyway and they do remain firm - not to mention their lack of flavor. Kathy, normally I'd agree with you because we all know hostas are just about invincible, but when you are talking about these bagged babies, it is a little different to my way of thinking....but then again, I'll admit that I do all sorts of things under the guise of gardening that a lot of other people don't! Lol. The shock of going from indoor conditions directly to the ground outdoors at this time of year...well, in zone 5 anything is possible....like the return to winter weather with little warning! I guess it might depend on how the up-to-now-pampered (being snug in peat moss and enclosed in plastic, indoors) roots would react as well. Proper hardening off is the key to success IMO.

yes you seem to sense they cannot go out,,,all three of those vegies require warm nights and soil before they go out, you may want to give the zuke a good sized pot till the weather warms up, they tend to stunt if grown too long in a small pot....summer has to come soon!

You just don't know how long they've been at Home Depot. They may have just come from the greenhouse somewhere......so let them harden off in your conditions first. Sometimes, when I'm concerned about the weather, I will keep milk jugs over them for a couple weeks. Sort of acts like a mini greenhouse.
I'm going to buy my veggie plants this week and will probably plant them about 10 days later (providing the garden isn't under water......or snow!).
We're supposed to be at 42 here tonight and 45 tomorrow night. Seems like its taking quite awhile to warm up!
