wanted: venting! bummm seeds

I am so aggravated from timing my seeds to plant so they all produce at the same time... Like Thanksgiving... and they are duds... Bum seeds that were store bought, dried out, traded 50 times and 10 years old.
I have to find some AVID gardeners who know their seeds are good and are willing to trade yearly, hold on to each others info and take pride in their gardening.
Does anyone else have this problem???
Now I'm chasing green onions, vidalias, Hales Cant, and Sugar snaps to get this right. Sorry for the aggrevation but I know I cant be alone...

Yes! I hate getting seeds in trade with no dates. There are some Round Robin seed exchanges on the Round Robin site with dates of the seeds needing to be fresh. The Garden Geeks one sounds awesome. Please join us!

I always ask before trading regarding the age of the seeds, and whether the person offering got them from a trade. I've traded for lots of seeds that weren't viable and many that, though viable, were NOT what they were supposed to be, which is maybe even more frustrating because I take the time to germinate and grow them only to discover that ther person who sent them was either dishonest or ignorant about what they sent. A few years ago I traded with three individuals for Hidcote lavender seeds, and in all three instances grew out hyssop--turns out all three traders had received mis-identified seeds from the same person and then passed them on to me. This is particularly prevalent now that the majority of GW traders don't harvest or purchase their seeds but instead build their trade lists with whatever they can get from others. Like bad pennies, these seeds go from person to person to person, and your chances of getting them just gets greater and greater.
. After years of being on GW, there are only a handful of people I even consider trading with because I am tired of wasting my time and postage in sending great seeds and getting crap in return. There ARE good traders here but you have to be vigilant and picky about whom you trade with in order to find them.

Reading the above posts lets me vent my own frustation in this regard. I can mail them out of my home for two first class stamps, even including packages of seeds, I have sent a couple out for SASBE as well and recieved them back fine. BUT if I take them to the post office, they continually change the price , anywhwere between .80 and 1.30! I had my wife send a empty SASBE out a couple weeks ago and they charged her the full price, So no more post office for me, two first class stamps unless they start getting rejected. Post offices are not perfect, they have alot of irritating rules they have to follow, at my work we mail out ALOT of mail, enough to get bulk rates as little as .31 cents per. YET I had a phone conversation with a post mistress in a rural town THAT KEPT rejecting our mail, she said she wouldnt keep on stamping postage due on our mail!!!!!! I informed her that was our bulk rate, YET she had no ideal of what I was talking about!. It was insane.

Yes, I agree that a biodegradable cup would be nice. I am concerned about anyone putting a whole box of tomato seedlings in the ground, they would be way too close to each other to survive. with my 4 yr. old nanny boy we cut the bottom off the foam cup and tear off the rim then set it in the prepared (lots of compost and loose soil and watered) hole. A little extra soil over the rim makes the cup disappear. This helps in "planting out" with a child, grownups too. You might be surprised how the cup falls apart over the summer and can be troweled in the next year like vermiculite, lets air and water to the roots.In about 10 days our frost date will pass and we can start our planting, what fun that will be! At the end of July I will be leaving my nanny family after 4 years and 2 months. It will be so hard. these boys are dear to me. The 4 yr. old was 3 mos. when I started. But I can feel good about introducing them to the beauty of nature and all the joy it holds. Many children are indoors hooked up to video games or TV and deprived of the out-of-doors. There is a book out now called "The Last Child in the Woods" and it covers the topic of children not being exposed to nature. I'm going on and on, sorry. I only had one guy come and say tomatoes were high. One woman wanting red hot peppers want to come and pick my peppers when I quit picking. I told her I pick the red for stringing. FREE of course. Another guy wanted to know what I would charge for tomatoes for canning if he came and picked his own. This has not been a tomato year as late and won't ripen what there is. Slugs, and tomato fruit worms. Rain rotted and cracked a lot and the holes from the bugs you toss more. And I am not the only one with late tomatoes and it frosted 3 times last week and we have had two nights with out frost and due to have hard freeze any time. Had a guy come tell me the other guy was cheap on the melons and he was doing this to the other guy I was cheaper and so on. I planned to tell him if he tried it again to go buy from the other guy then. I have found most people are nice. People here make the rounds to see the prices and so on what there is, Very small market. This my second year and even with few tomatoes not selling good. I could sell more canning tomatoes. But not a lot more. Not as many people coming to market as last year. People are not buying at least from me. Earlier when so hot they want tomatoes and fruit. I feel I am getting fair share of sales and I may not make as much but not as much stuff either. Market was trying this year to get in more people, entertainment and ads. Economy here, or what? Some people just like to complain and others just don't have the money. More tried to have small gardens too I think. One lady wanting canning tomatoes said she put in 45 plants and could pick enough for couple jars every few days. Would not ripen. She asked around and was told they had canning tomatoes at $22 a bushel and she told me she could not afford that. I heard this from lots their tomatoes no good or not ripening or Curly top got them. This is tomato growing area too. Cannery use to have acres and acres of them here. I have never seen tomatoes do like this year. I swear I have tossed out at least half and then put the other poor in to canning to sell cheap. Mine venting is just rotten weather this year. I do find most people nice and they sack up their stuff and tell me what and pay for it. I did raise my prices a little this year from last but keep to same price for the season. Although I have boxes and bags of anaheim peppers and this will be my last week to sell I think and they had gone slow this year. I am debating to put them on special . But I doubt I would sell any more as not many coming. Is it going to get worst or better next year????? Do I do a market garden again or quit. ????? I know this area they will not pay high prices. I have been very discourage this year overthese tomatoes and that was what sold last year.

The most disturbing thing to me regarding this issue and issues like it is that this is what the majority of the children of this planet are being taught. There is just a general decline in the amount of "caring" that parents are instilling in the youth of the world. Children are being taught that everything in this world is disposable as long as it creates a "convenience" for mom, dad, and the kids. I have always had an appreciation of nature, but I moved to the country from a subdivision in Fort Worth. This place has taught me so much. You CAN live in harmony with nature and in so many ways, it's much more beneficial for US to co-exist rather than having an attitude that it's us OR them. Ya know, we didn't have any manicured playgrounds when I was a kid. We played in fields with grass and native plants that were sometimes over our heads. We played in creeks and caught crawdads with bacon tied to a string, then let 'em go just for fun. Now I know that due to circumstances, grass that's taller than kids heads is probably not a good idea these days. Too many bad folks out there, but come on people. In my opinion, one of the greatest tragedies of our time, is that kids these days are unable to experience life and nature the way I was completely free to do so as a child. I truly believe that given the opportunity to do so, these children would grow up with a much more developed appreciation of the world and all of its wonders. Phew, that's two rants in one morning. kms4me~Yes that is most infuriating as well...
If I receive a "pot luck" at least its stated in offering because there are a few that enjoy surprises but I'm not one! I'm to serious about color coding and placement.
I'm just going to keep working my list of FAB traders and shake it off...
Thinking about designating a spot in the back corner of my yard for the questionables until they prove correctly labeled.

Maybe a rating system like they have on Ebay would be helpful---that way new traders can learn when they make errors. I also get concerned...what if I get a veggie and it is actually something non-edible or worse poisonous. Seed traders could be rated on viability, labeling, etc...

Also, please provide feedback. I would like to know personally if I have sent seeds that weren't viable or labeled correctly. I would rather replace the trade with something satisfactory, have a good "credit line" and learn from my mistakes than have someone upset that they did not get what was expected.

A rating system could also serve as a learning tool. Experienced traders could find eachother more easily, and quality control could be better tracked---just a few ideas.

When you use the R&R forum to post feedback please read through some posts before submitting a new review if you have never done it before.
Search the forum first using the search box under the last thread on the page to find the review thread for the person you wish to review. A new thread should not be started unless the person has no existing reviews. If you do need to start a new thread for a new person, the thread title should be simply the person's screen name exactly as it is in GW-no embellishments, no comments, etc. in the title. Save all that for the actual review :)

Likewise, you can search the forum to find the person you want to read reviews about.
