sugar snap peas not thriving

On April 2 I sowed a double row of sugar snap peas on either side of a trellis. After approximately one month, the peas are no taller than six inches.

I used an inoculant before planting, and I've fertilized with Neptune's Harvest fish emulsion (high in phosphorus).

For some reason, I expected them to be much bigger by now. The weather here has been quite erratic varying from very hot to very cool.

My sugar snaps were planted around 4/15 and they are about 3-4 inches tall.

I think it may be the weather. We just had a nice rain yesterday with temps around 75. Woke up this morning to walk through the garden and it seemed like the potatoes, salad, and several others doubled in size overnight. Peas still just sitting there.

If the peas look healthy, they sound ok to me. My second sowing planted just a little later are about 5 inches tall. The first planting is about 10 inches tall.

I planted snowpeas in January. Gathered some snowpeas for few months. Pulled them out in early May. Replanted another row. They are about six to eight inches tall now. I'm thinking they'll do well again because last year, I planted them in March or April and I had a good yield. After pulling the dried peas, dry them thoroughly and cut them up and use as mulch.

Eating the peas should be fine. Depending on where you are and your temps, the pea plant may just have reached the end of its life cycle and not have a disease. Peas don't like heat or being too wet or dry. I'm in middle GA and my peas are dying back because it is past season for them. I'd go ahead and plant dill in the pot after a good turning of the soil to loosen it up. Happy gardening!

Yes, plant thick. I have a few varieties that always do well and trying a couple more this year. Sugar Ann and classic Sugar Snap do well for me. I plant, direct seed, my first double row as soon as i can work the soil, then again the next 2-3 weekends, a week apart-ish. (wet rough weather will sometimes keep me out of the garden). If i relied on just one of those plantings i may not see one pea. Seeds are cheap and the harvest can be buckets full. Once the weather warms, in go my pole beans right behind the peas, in, again, a three week planting, but way less thick. As they are getting a footing, the peas start to brown and crisp and pull out with ease. Planting a few varieties, (i go overboard with 15-20), will give lots of peas and beans as they have different growth times. Early on i had given up on peas for a few years thinking i had the wrong climate but now that i 'insurance' plant i get enough to give plenty away. I get all my peas from Johnny's. And a random pack here and there if i can't help myself from the nursery racks...those racks seem to have a 'buy me' magnet. I try not to look...

Johnny's Selected Seeds addressed this issue with peas recently. Here is some info from them: http://www.johnnyseeds.com/growers-library/vegetables/selection-pea-seed-quality.html They had/have a breeder working on "cleaning up" the seed stock for them. I have experienced unwanted variations in some of the varieties I grow the last few years. Some edible pod peas were definitely NOT edible to me. I've even thought about spacing some of my own plants widely and rouging out the unwanted ones and then saving (hopefully) truer to type seed myself. My worst seed lots were from two different types of peas, one a snow pea variety and one a snap type variety. They were from two different vendors....one sold at a local store, and one ordered online. Both are well known names, but I prefer not to name them as I think this is a widespread problem. Neither one was Johnny's, though. I think they are working hard to supply their customers with top quality seed. Hopefully, other companies will do the same.

Just to make you feel better,that your peas are just fine, I planted these Feb 14 (yeah, I know...I'm a rebel ;-)
and they are still only 2' tall or less.... mostly less ;-)
but they are doing great...Woo Hoo... Start your engines people... We are ready to ROCK..... Woo HOOOOOO ;-)

My peas are looking absolutely miserable. Digging some of them up reveals the root severed by some ground-dwelling nasty bug. I have lots of millipedes but I don't know if they're the culprit or not.

Started mine around 3/24, and they're about 6 inches tall. But they look like they're about to send up those things they use for climbing, so I think they'll start growing faster pretty soon.

Had similar experience with mine. Planted late March, here recently they finally started to take off, then the rabbits mowed them down to ground level. I tilled the ground up and planted tomatoes and peppers in their place.

If the nights have been too cold, then the sugar snaps won't grow too much. I'm in zone 7 so am a little ahead of you. Once the temps warmed up a little, the snow peas and sugar snap peas began taking off.

They seem to be growing at least 1.5" a day now. Below are comparison pics from Apr 6 and May 3. The sugar snap peas are in the container on the right. The snow peas are int the containers in the middle and left.
