clay soil, can't add compost

Recently, my dad, sister and I have started making a vegetable garden, however there is one problem. I realized shortly after that the soil is very clay-like, with a uniform color, dries easily and clumps when wet. The seeds and plants have already been put in, and therefore nobody can mix anything with the soil. Is there any way I can make sure the vegetables grow decently?
