Time for a change

This bed used to look very good -- believe it or not -- I was very happy with it for a long time. But now it's lost its pizazz and I need to spiff it up again. The phormium used to be accompanied by vivid orange and yellow canna, a nicely colored fancy-leaved geranium, and bright asclepias, and the bromeliads were nicely colored and undamaged from cold. But the asclepias tried to conquer the entire bed by reseeding, the cannas and geraniums have dwindled, so it's time for a change.

I know this is more a plant question than a design question, and I might be better off on the California forum, but it's more fun here. I will not be making the bed deeper nor adding any curves. : )

The bed faces west and gets what passes for hot afternoon sun on the southern California coast (lots of overcast mornings and evenings here). There is irrigation and the soil is well-amended sandy loam with lots of iron in it. I like hot colors, but flowers are optional.
