Using old orchid fertilizer on veggie?

I have some old MSU formula granular orchid fertilizer that I perhaps won't need anymore. I'm thinking of applying them to my vegetable garden. I have some tomatoes, corns, and some greens. My garden's soil is poor (clay-ish), and I don't care much about being organic so using chemical fertilizer is totally fine. I'm just wondering whether there's anything in this orchid fertilizer that might be harmful to human (when the plants are eaten as food). The fertilizer seemed produced by a small local vender using the MSU formula, and there's not much information on the package other than the recommended dose (no detailed ingredients).

Or to put it this way, have you heard of any commercial fertilizer that cannot be used for plants that are intended to be eaten?

As long as it is strictly only a fertilizer, no. The problem is many lawn and orchard fertilizers come with added pest, fungus, and other disease control chems that may not be approved for use on food crops or only approved for application prior to fruit set.

You indicate you don't know the ingredients in this so if you can't contact the company to find out what they are I'd recommend not using it.

Using a known, approved-for-use on food crops synthetic is fine. Using an unknown is something else.

I would never use a product without a list of ingredients on the label. It shouldn't be sold that way. If it's just the MSU orchid formula that's been illegally repackaged, those ingredients are just fine.

I've wondered about this question too. With ordinary plants in potting soil, the risk of over-fertilizing is that as the water in the soil is taken up by the plant or evaporates, the concentration of fertilizer salts can increase greatly. At some point the osmotic pressure of the water and fertilizer surrounding the roots can interfere with water uptake by the roots and possibly damage the roots. With mounted orchids though, I haven't seen any information on what happens physiologically when watering with fertilizer. It seems three things are going on: (1) the roots are absorbing water into the velamen, (2) the roots are absorbing fertilizer ions, and (3) water is evaporating into the surrounding air. I would assume that you would want all of the fertilizer to be absorbed before all of the water on the surface of the roots is gone. Otherwise there would be a thin, dry coating of all the residual fertilizer on the roots. So the question is how fast roots can absorb fertilizer - anyone know? It would seem that for that reason, it would be bad to use any fertilizer at all when the air is warm and dry, since the water on the roots would evaporate too fast.

I use both the "Bloom" and the "Grow" interchangeably (SP?). Depending on the plants and season etc. Once a month I throw in superthrive and once a month or so I throw in epsom with the fert. I feel kind of lame going on about it due to the organic in my name. But I have a degree in Organic Horticulture, and I used to use a chem fert just on orchids and Age Old on everything else. Then one day I realized how dumb I thought that was and switched. That was many years ago and have seen an actual improvement in growth and blooms. Also, now I have a 19 month old that likes to eat the dirt and bark from my plants. Although I know that the fert no matter what it is shouldn't be in the mouth, I feel better that it is organic matter. Also the numbers are so low that you don't have to worry so much about reducing the amount, ie. no burned roots. Hope this helps. Shani

Thank you for taking the time to post, Al. And I won't initiate an argument, just simply point out that some won't use a synthetic, no matter what. I am one of them. I don't have an idea how or where those types of fertilizers are produced, whereas, organics have been around forever, and therefore tried and true. There are good reasons, recycling not the least (i.e., compost, vermicompost) to incorporate this type of routine, of course. Since the mid-2000's, when coir started to gain traction, there have been many gains made in using coco. The salt issue is almost completely gone. (there are plenty of scientfic studies to show the effects of salinity, and even side-by-sides of different brands) I do believe that the best brands are now well-known. I am more of the mind to use BOTH peat and coir in a mix, to get the best qualities out of both. Again, I like organic growing, and I'll probably always be the one to tell you that there is a taste difference that is a direct trade-off for lack of yield, produced by my lack of cutting edge know-how. Either way, this isn't so much of an attempt to persuade people to choose organic, as to inform those who already have. I have a tomato plant growing right now in a 3 gallon pot, with straight Botannicare coir. The color is a little light, but the leaves are absolutely huge, and the yield is very good. Not as vigorous in growth as my SIP tomatoes in straight peat and perlite, but also a different variety. So take it with a grain of salt. I have only fed the coco with Dr Earth organic ferts, once every two weeks a dose of compost tea, and every other week with fish and seaweed. I water it until it runs out, and then let the excess wick back up over the course of the next day.

Dave; how about pine bark mulch to use in the vegetable garden? Same problems as other wood mulches. Pine bark is better than the usual shredded pine mulch and in limited amounts works as a good container soil amendment according to folks on the container gardening forum but not as a mulch. The best vegetable garden mulches are ones that will suppress the weeds, retain the soil moisture, AN slowly break down over the season so that they can easily be incorporated into the soil in the fall or following spring to improve the soil tilth and nutrient levels. They include: straw, hay, shredded leaves, grass clippings, newspaper, cardboard, compost, etc. what is the least "toxic" method of preventing/controlling bugs Anney covered this point exceptionally well. Suggest some research into IPM (Integrated Pest Management) - lots of web info and sites to help. The least toxic way is to learn to recognize the real pests and learn to tolerate some damage that is purely appearance not a threat to the plants. Learn to do egg patrols, leaf monitoring, hand picking, use plain water or soapy water sprays, NEEM oil, row covers, etc. Then let nature take its course. In some locations that may mean buying some beneficial insects to release in the garden. Unlike some believe, Sevin dust is one of the MOST toxic. If you feel you must bring out the big guns then use the Sevin liquid spray instead. Dave

Thanks for the advice. It's from a local orchid show years ago and says only "MSU formula" plus the dosage. I guess you are right that it's a repackage.

Sources online shows the MSU formula (for RO water) should contain (13-3-15):
Nitrate Nitrogen 12.5%
Ammoniacal Nitrogen 0.5%
Phosphorus as P2O5 3.0%
Potassium as K2O 15.0%
Calcium 8.0%
Magnesium 2.0%
Iron 0.17%
Manganese 0.08%
Zinc 0.04%
Copper 0.04%
Boron 0.01%
Molybdenum 0.01%

From my limited knowledge, those ingredients look fine to me. I just want to make sure it doesn't contain some heavy metal or strange hormone. Although I have no idea whether their concentration matters or not.

On researching this question, I found that actually it's not easy to say whether a product is approved-for-use on food crops, as Dave said. Other than those that are specifically designed for vegetables, many generic fertilizers don't mention whether they can be used on food crops or not. Like the DynaGro Foliage Pro I have been using, I couldn't find a reliable source that states that product is safe for food crops.

DynaGro Foliage Pro says "use to maintain healthy, controlled growth on foliage plants and trees" (which they define as ferns and palms). So it doesn't should like a vegetable garden fertilizer to me. The only garden vegetables I can think of where it might even be applicable would be leafy greens.

The only product they list for vegetables is their so-called General Purpose Liquid Grow but then instead of vegetables they list application rates on it for African Violets and in hydroponics.

If vegetables are what you are growing then there are many much better vegetable garden fertilizers out there.

Fertilizers are like cleaners/soaps. They take the same cleaner and market for various uses. So goes for the fertilizers. Add or subtract from a given NPK and market it for orchids, tomatoes, roses et cetera. The trace elements shown in the analysis is not going to harm anything in small amounts.

I would use the one in question in 1/2 strength, occasionally on just about anything I want until it is all gone.

Got it. Thanks guys! I'll just use it for now and look for something better for the veggie in the future. I hate wasting. :)
