I thought Callas were too expensive and fussy to grow. I was wrong! I grow them in pots and they do great for me. I am not the best at watering regularly and they are on a hot deck, and yet they perform well and multiply yearly. I take them in after the first frost, let the pots dry out thoroughly, and stack them in the cool basement. They start right on time in the spring. They multipy quite vigorously. So I have splurged on some fancy ones, just one or 2 of each, and now have lots. I have also been collecting seeds and if you are patient, you will have a million callas in about 3 years. Altho it is not clear what colour you will get from seed. One thing I learned - gave a bunch to a friend who planted them in enriched soil (miracle gro??) and her plants are HUGE, gorgeous foliage, but they have never bloomed in those pots. We are repotting them this year in a more spare soil to see what happens. I hope you get lots - even small ones. They will grow!

Well, I'm going against the grain here, but I just adore calla lilies and bought them several times through the years, usually planting them in part shade here in Oklahoma, because that's what they are SUPPOSED to like. It seemed like they didn't do well. Often, if they came back one year, they never would the next. (Working full time and also having a HUGE yard, I simply don't have time to dig up anything other than my elephant ears in fall!). So, a few years ago, I noticed that I had two sets of callas coming back, year after year, in my FRONT planter....a terraced hill on the west side of my house, in full sun! What the heck! So I planted a couple more, and then last year, I bought several on a clearance for $1 each, and planted all on the west side in full sun.....and they are doing great! Go figure! Now, I am sure people will have all sorts of reasons I shouldn't do this, but I live in bermuda-grass city, where weed cloth is TOTALLY worthless, and it's hot and dry! My flowerbeds are unusual in that I, through trial and LOTS of error, now do the following when establishing a bed: I till the soil and amend it, then lay down pvc watering pipe with tiny holes in the 10 or 2 o'clock position, then lay 6 mil black plastic on top, then cottonseed hulls, river rock, or light colored cedar/landscape chips completely covering the plastic, and then cut holes through the plastic and dig my planting holes. As time goes on, I simply cut more and more plastic away around the growing plants, enlarging the holes, interspersing perennials and annuals as desired. I know people will say this will never work, but it's the ONLY way I've been able to keep the Bermuda and weeds out, keep the moisture in, irrigate with this doggone hard well water, and maintain quite extensive landscaping. I wouldn't claim to be a fantastic gardener by any means, but over time, as my beds have filled in, it's not looking too bad! This is one wormy place now, can't dig up anywhere inside a flower bed without hitting several good juicy ones, which supposedly indicates healthy soil? I don't know, but the plants grow and bloom! Sometimes the annuals surprise me, like this year, where we had such a mild Winter that a BUNCH of stuff came right back, even though I thought it was supposed to die in the cold! I don't know, I just know that gardening was WAY more work and prone to many more failures before my system evolved into the current one, and if something I'm doing allows the calla lilies to come back year after year, and the flowers bloom well, shoot, that's good enough for me! Now, if someone has a suggestion for getting rid of those nasty armadillos that just LOVE to tear up my beds.....I'm wondering if pans of beer full of dead grubbs might make them drunk enough that I can chase them down....maybe if I ALSO drank beer, I'd have the guts to club them to death.....or at least grab them by their fat round bellies and toss them in a van to go live down by the river!

I would say your plan is pretty risky. I tried it this year for my daughter's June 25th wedding. I had several calla bulbs that I had planted several years ago in the ground that had been blooming reliably every May. (no special over-wintering precautions, but then, our winters here in north Texas are probably much milder than yours). Then, I planted a few every weekend for 5 or 6 weeks, beginning mid-March. Well, I think the only week I didn't have any callas in bloom from mid-May to mid-July was the week of my daughter's wedding! I had blooms before the wedding and blooms after but none for the ceremony! Luckily, we had arranged with a florist to get the bulk of the flowers....we were just hoping to have a few from the garden for sentimental reasons. Check around with florists in your area. Since we were doing very simple arrangements for the bride and bridesmaids (three large callas wrapped with a ribbon for the bride, 1 for each bridesmaid) and on the tables (a single calla in a bud vase), we just ordered plain callas stems from the florist and added the ribbons ourselves. I think we ended up getting the giant callas for 2.75 a stem and the smaller ones for the tables for 10/$15....or something like that. We did find a large difference in pricing between florists, so call EVERYONE! You can also order them online from SAM's and online florists, but we wanted the security of having a local florist so that if something went wrong with getting the callas in, there'd be someone responsible who would make sure we had some kind of flowers! I loved the callas for the wedding.....they are so elegant and simple....to me they're the perfect wedding flower. Good luck and congratulations!

The cluster of balls are in fact the fruits which contain seeds, if you are interested in growing them from seeds then leave them on the plant (they will ripe in 3-4 months depending on the temperature, more temperature quickly they ripe) when they turn yellowish green the stalk holding them turns dry (some times gets mushy) this is the time to take them out, each of the balls carry 1-6 seeds usually, sow them immediately as they don't store well. You haven't mentioned your zone and as they are sensitive to frost and low temperatures, you have to dig them out before frost if they are in ground. Izhar
