Design help-bed by front porch

I just moved into a new construction home in Iowa from Arizona. In the front yard there is a bed that I need to design. It is about 10x20 feet. It is on the east side of the house, so it gets morning sun. I will try and post a picture once it stops raining. I planted a few thing in there just so it wouldn't look completely empty. I planted an Endless Summer Hydrangea in the middle. There are some gladiolus bubs planted along the south edge (against the garage) and some kind of ornamental grass planted in front of the gutter spout. I would be willing to pull everything and start over (but I really like the hydrangea). It is clay soil and it dries out if not watered.

What should I do with this area? I would like it to be really nice since it is the entrance to the house. Some winter interest would be good too.

It seems like it needs some height. Maybe a dwarf Japanese Maple in the center. It needs a foundation plating up by the house, maybe boxwoods or a dwarf low growing yew.

I would bookend the porch with a large flowering shrub, and bookend the steps with a 3' evergreen shrub. I think it would be most important to reshape the bed as shown: grass borders the drive nearly to the steps; the bed is a little deeper front-to-back (in scale with the large house); and the curve at the front of the bed is a longer arch to blend more smoothly with the woods. (Hopefully, you'll arrange and set the rocks more artistically.) A partial plant list might be dwarf yaupon holly, panicle hydrangea (ignore that in the picture looks like "big leaf,) daylilies such as Stella, and groundcover ... whatever is low and works best there ... maybe blue rug juniper. A street, shade or flowering tree, or trees, at the foreground (out of view of this picture) would help if the front yard has a vacant, empty feel.

The picture is no help. move the camera up to the city sidewalk, in line with the front door, and take a series of slightly overlapping pictures that pan the ENTIRE scene from far left to far right, including neighboring houses in the first and last pics. Unless you move the cars for the picture, we wouldn't be able to see left of drive. Please take when light is good. Above picture much too dark.

Thanks! We ar rebuilding because it's basically all rotted underneath. When we bought the house it was already kind of falling apart. We're just clueless as to what would give our house the best curb appeal. Definitely going to have steps going out the front instead of the side.

Find a window that is near the size of those in the dormers. It also needs to match the number of panes (6) in the dormer windows. You don't need to mirror the dormers only the windows in them. You need a carpenter to cut a hole in the garage gable for the window, then place framing for the window on the interior of the cutout. The window is put in place, secured and trim to match the rest of the house is cut and fitted to the outside. Adding a vent uses the same cut and frame, but doesn't require matching other features unless you have other gable vents that you wish to match. Vents are made in square, rectangular, triangular, round, half round, arched and octagonal shapes. They should have metal screen or hardware cloth on the inside to keep small birds and such from getting into attic space. This can be added if not part of the vent as sold.

I bought a yew to put in there. The lady at the nursery said it could get up to 10 feet tall but can be kept trim. That should give a little vertical and also some winter green.

Do you think I should still add boxwoods by the foundation? I am trying to root some now for the back, but could do some more for the front too.
