Questions re: using flagstone for backyard patio?
Comments (3)It can be done with the right size and thickness of stone along with a expertly tight seamed flagstone but for that type of skilled craftsmanship and material you must be prepared to pay a premium for the materials and labor. It is definitely not a first time do it yourselfer project. You'll have much better success in pouring a slab and mortaring your flagstone if your skill level is below a master mason ability. below is a dry lay flagstone patio ( shown without the furniture)with dg backfilling the joints. Its been in for over 15 years and has held up very well , the mason that installed it, Randy Shadrick of Outdoor Environments has about 27 years as a mason....See MoreBuilding a Flagstone Patio
Comments (7)Are you using landscape fabric between the crushed stone and sand layers? I believe you should. I'm not familiar with lannon stone. How large are the stones? We just built a patio using large salvaged bluestone slabs. They were extremely heavy and hard to level. It was tough, and a huge job. The uneven bottom surface of the stones made it especially difficult. If lannon stones are smaller and have a smooth bottom, you shouldn't have much trouble. To discourage weeds(and ants) you can use polymeric sand instead of regular sand between the stones. Just sweep it into the cracks and wet it down (don't do it if rain is predicted -- you don't want too much water). It sticks to itself, but allows drainage, Okay, and here's my cheat: to get the correct slope, I took a 6' 1x6 and liquid-nailed a 1x2 to its wider face at the proper slope. l lay the 1x6 on edge across the stone and put the bubble level on the 1x2. If it showed it as level, the slope of the patio was right....See MoreFlagstone patio--mortared vs. gravel/sand?????
Comments (64)I just built a quartzite patio in Reno, NV. I used the new product, polymeric sand and it worked great! I got the sand in 60 lb bags for $20 a bag from Home Depot. My patio is 9X27.5 and I used 5 bags. It looks like regular sand and sweeps into the joints. You then mist it 3-4 times waiting about 10 minutes between each misting. The water activates a weak polymer glue and locks the sand granules in place. We don't have much problems with frost heaves here, but if a stone moves you can pull up the sand in chunks and step on it or use a shovel to get it back to a granular stage, sweep it back in place and re-mist. Although the polymeric sand sets up pretty hard I don't think it would stand up to a leg from a patio chair, etc., so we plan on getting sled style chairs for the patio. It does do well with walking on it and the sand stays put! So far we are very happy with it. I'll let you know how it goes thru the winter. We get very little rain here but we do get snow....See MoreLoose flagstone patio
Comments (2)Try polymer sand...WONDERFUL! It is a sand that, when wet, will harden like concrete, yet is supposed to remain flexible. We just put it in ours and I am so happy with the way it looks!...See Morekarinl
