hostas and windowboxes...what is it for you?
Comments (20)Not only are the windowboxes pretty on the outside, they're pretty from the inside looking out as well. One thing I should mention about the Windsor boxes...they instruct you to drill drainage holes in the bottom which my DH did without any difficulty. I'm not sure why they couldn't have done that in the factory. He had a carpenter friend help him hang them and made sure they were in the studs due to being so heavy when filled. They didn't seem to have any problems getting them up. The first year I had them, I used one of those soil mixes for containers that touted "moisture crystals" to help hold in the moisture. That was a BIG mistake. We had a prolonged rainy period and the soil would never dry out. After a week-10 days of no rain, I could still take a hand full of the soil and squeeze out water. My plants suffered and I lost some to root rot. At the end of that season, I removed all that soil and replaced it with Garden Magic Top Soil and Sweet Peat mixture which seems to be working out just fine....See MoreReally need siding help 1885 house
Comments (1)Cedar, but there are many different shingles available so you would need to determine what you have but in the Northeast Cedar is without a doubt the most popular and I would say 99% chance that they are Red Cedar as well if they are original to the house....See MoreUpdate on my rose thorn puncture
Comments (18)if you Google rose thorn injuries you get all kinds of articles. Almost all of them will say that the biggest problem is the tip of the thorn remaining in the skin. I only know this because I smacked my knee with a rose thorn a couple months ago. I wound up with the most unbelievably painful knee. The tip didn't break of for me though. What I did was puncture the bursa on my knee cap. Crazy painful. Some of the things I read though were of very serious chronic conditions caused by those bacterial infections. I would definitely stay on that injury. Insist they make sure there is no thorn fragment in there and that ALL the infection is gone....See Morehow long can a framed house be exposed to the elements without siding?
Comments (12)Depends a lot on how wet it has been and for how long it was wet. Occasional rain with no standing water for more than a day and completely dry before getting wet again once or twice should be fine. If there is a mold/mildew problem it will be evident. The better plan now is to do a mold/mildew remediation on the affected areas and make sure the wood is completely dry before covering with siding/drywall. Years ago, I was involved in building several Habitat for Humanity homes that were not dried in for several months in early spring to summer. Three had trusses installed that were wet when installed and not dried out when sheathed. All had nail pops in wall/ceiling drywall for several subsequent years. We also learned to paint the subfloors to prevent plywood from being damaged by standing water....See MoreDesertHills
