How do I tell a good stink bug from a bad one?

Someone told me if their shoulders were rounded it was a good bug. Geez! I can't get that close to one before it goes away. I have brown and green ones. Which ones are the good ones?? TIA!!

Far as I know there are NO good stink bugs. All 3 forms/colors are considered pests. But they are sometimes confused with assassin bugs which are good guys and do have round, not shield shaped, shoulders and longer bodies.

Yes, the serrated shoulders indicate one of the "good" stink bug species at least in the Pacific Northwest. They also supposedly have less distinct banding of the antennae and less distinct checker-boarding of the abdomen edges.
The native species are only considered pests in that they may annoy you by getting into your house in the winter, otherwise they are no problem. The new Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is 10 times worse in that respect, and it loves my thornless blackberries too.

I hate stink bugs! We don't normally have problelms with them here in MN but when we bought our RV in Virginia and brought it home we found that our RV was infested with stink bugs! The only way I can get rid of them without them stinking the place or multiplying like crazy is to cut the top of a water bottle just enough to fit a cardboard toilet paper cylinder. I put about 1/8 to a 1/4 cup dish soap in it and dilute it with a little water then fit the cylinder in it and I can scrape the "stinkers" off the ceiling or the walls. When they fall into the dish soap it is too slippery for them to get out and they die almost instantly.

Looking for stink bug traps leads one to some fascinating information about these critters. One reason pheromone attractants don't really work very well is that though they're produced by males to attract females, this alone isn't enough to lure a stinkbug into a trap. They also need a vibrational song that is then transmitted through the plant tissue to help the stinkbugs find each other! How strange nature is. PDF report on Red-Shouldered Stink Bugs, and this excerpt: Substrate-borne vibrational signals. It has been known for some time that stink bugs produce substrate-borne vibrational signals for communication at short range... These signals are generated with a tymbal organ that stretches across the dorsal surface under the elytra. The vibrations are transmitted into the plant stem through the insectÂs legs, and are propagated along the plant as bending waves. The signals are detected by vibration sensors in the legs of the receiving insect. Both males and females appear to produce several different vibrational songs. To locate each other once on the same plant, males and females produce a duet of calling songs, with one or both insects following the signals to their sources. Once at close range or having contacted each other, the insects may begin producing courtship songs. There is virtually no airborne sound associated with these signals, and their primary transmission medium is clearly the plant substrate. Because these signals are transmitted through the plant, they may be less prone to eavesdropping by parasitoids and predators than a more widely dispersed airborne acoustic signal. Insects may be attracted to the vicinity of a trap by the pheromone, but if the shorter-range vibrational signals are not present, the insects may not move into the trap towards the pheromone source. I like your idea dogwind. That is fighting fire with fire. Give the stinkbug some offensive stink. I bought and have been using the Bugzooka. You can find it with a google search. I am not associated with the product in any way. The bugzooka can get in nooks and crannies better than I can, plus it has a longer reach. I can drive the bug with a stick and then "zook" them. The advantage is you do not have to set off their stink bombs that way. Plus, I have a tendency to lose patience and knock off some tomatoes or break a stem during the chase. I seem to be less damaging with the bugzooka. I don't know how long the bugzooka will last. I have managed to pull in 2 adults at a time, plus a bunch of the nymphs. There are still eggs out there, so I keep patrolling for them and removing them.

One thing to remember about sheets--as the thread count goes up, the threads get thinner. One unclipped toenail can snag and then rip some of the less expensive higher-thread count sheets. You need to look for three things in sheets. The thread count--400 and above is considered "luxury." Be aware that over 800 thread count sheets may be counting the plys (number of strands) in the individual sheet, instead of the threads themselves. So some 1200 thread count sheets are really 600 thread count--but the threads are 2 ply. The type of cotton is also important. Egyptian cotton is considered the top of the line. Turkish cotton is rapidly approaching Egyptian cotton in quality. Then there's Pima or Supmia cotton (they are the same thing with 2 different names). Then there's plain old cotton, followed by cotton/poly blends. And then all polyester sheets. Lower thread count sheets have a plain under-over weave. Higher thread count sheets tend to have a sateen weave--the top thread is carried over 4-6 strands of thread before going under again. This makes for a smoother top surface on the sheet. But the sateen weave is what makes these sheets silky--and that's what people who want a crisper sheet don't like. Those people should look for sheets with a poplin or muslin weave. When buying sheets, open the package and feel them. You'll soon feel the difference between top-quality cotton and lower. I used to sell sheets in a large department store. We had an 800 count Egyptian cotton sheet and a 1000 count regular cotton sheet. People would assume that the 1000 count sheet was "better," based solely on the thread count. But then I'd have them feel both sets of sheets--and they almost always preferred the 800 count sheet, because the cotton was softer. So it's not just thread count. Look at the fabric content. Touch the sheets. As for returns, washing the sheets didn't make them ineligible for returns. We took back sheets for months after they were purchased if there was a problem with them. Discount retailers might not, but a higher-end store--it's at least worth trying to return them.

My stinkers aren't as pretty as yours! They are just plain brown with brown legs. There are only a few of them, so far. They haven't gotten inside the house! Thank God! I've seen pictures and heard horror stories about that!!

"Kudzu bugs" are now moving into the South-East US...growing exponentially the past few years.

They look like regular brown "stink bugs" (and smell like them when crushed) with different shell coloring (white/beige with a lot of black dots/lines all over their shell making up a huge part of their coloration) and they are more rounded than pointy on the hind end.

They are absolutely plague-like on soy bean plantings...as well as other plantings. They are huge feeders.

Thanks to "wild" kudzu all over the place, it seems they're not going away any time soon.

I remember seeing Kudzu vines when we drive on 95 through the Carolinas. We don't have that here. Mostly millions of acres of pine trees. Native and tree farms for harvesting for pine products. I was informed about that bug months ago in master gardening. I will keep my eyes open for it though. Thanks, digdirt for the bug links. I am familiar with assassin bugs, although I might have killed some of their instars thinking they were leaf footed bugs.
