A pride, joy with a big fragrance! Pictures

I can't believe how many flowers my little 6inch high "jasmine" is getting as of today..

They smell remarkably sweet and potent! Love this plant, along with my citrus.

This is a first time for me, to be able to grow this jasmine up here, since all others previous I would kill from rot. It is also a first time for me to keep all my citrus alive and healthy into a third year!

This time, my latest plant was planted in the 5.1.1 mix as "soon" as I took it home, months ago, and it seems to be enjoying the mix with all my others..

Beautiful mike,i have no luck whatsoever with gardenias,never have and probably never will.I think they don't like me!!! LOL

I just looked up this rose on Helpmefind (which incidentally reminded me to donate my yearly amount, so glad they have Paypal), and it's a lovely rose, which is described as having none to mild scent, even though one of the captions next to the rose pictures described it as very fragrant. Someone needs to change that none to mild I would think. It was bred by Amanda Beales which should be some recommendation for its worthiness. Ingrid

My plant stays in the ground year round and I have not had problem with rot nor do I give it any special care. I started out with one plant about 8 years ago and each year get more offshoots which I have planted in various parts of the yard. The plant itself gets taller every year,six feet is the tallest now. I forgot how tall it gets in the jungle but I read that the tuber can weigh about 20 lbs. and is edible.My plant goes dormant in November and appears again in June. It grows straighter under my Queen Palms where it gets filtered sunlight.That stem is like a huge drinking straw, it's hollow.If you are ever in Gainesville, pay a visit to the Kanapaha Gardens on Archer. I did notice that my Violet’s Pride had some blackspot the first spring after planting it in a large pot,(as you can see at the beginning of this thread). I never had a problem with that again, but that was also the spring CA had a record rainfall. I can see that Violet’s Pride might be a bit susceptible to blackspot, since I didn’t see that on any of my other roses. Since the spring of 2017, we’ve been extremely dry here. VP never showed blackspot again, but we really don’t normally get blackspot here. I recieved a second Violet’s Pride in my Spring Hill “Rainbow of Roses” collection. I planted that one in the ground. I gave the potted one away. It’s doing fine in hot Bakersfield, CA. The one in the ground blooms quite a bit, even in the heat of summer. Abraham Darby has become intwined with her. Although she’s pretty, she’s not really a favorite. Sometimes the color can be a bit blah in the real heat. I’m grateful she hasn’t tried to take over more than her allotted space, as many roses in my garden tend to do. A fine rose, but she never turned out to be one of my big favorites. I have 3 full grown lavender roses, Violet’s Pride, Love Song, and Poseidon. I like the other two quite a bit more than Violet’s Pride. I just like their blooms and colors more than Violet’s Pride, but that’s just my preference. She’s given me no trouble. She just finished up a flush, but I think I see one peeking out from a piece of Abraham Darby. It’s just barely getting light outside, so I’ll see if I can get a picture. That's a fun comparison: Earth Angel vs. Alnwick Castle. I have both of them also, growing across the path from each other. The similarities: They both can have cupped flowers, they both have good fragrance, and they are both upright growers that don't get much disease. The differences, whether good or bad are up to you: Flowers first. Earth Angel has mostly white flowers with a pale pink center. They are extremely susceptible to thrips damage. They remain cupped in the heat. In my garden they grow in tight clusters. They require deadheading. Alnwick Castle has pastel pink flowers solid color all the way through that are non-fading. They don't show thrips damage. They open up in the heat, showing a frilly center. They grow in looser clusters. They drop their petals when the flowers fade. AC's flowers tend to nod slightly with first flush. EA's flowers are upright. Flower size is about the same in each, about 2-1/2" in my garden. EA's flowers last 4-5 days on the bush, AC's flowers last 2-3 days. They both grow and bloom in the heat. Taken today after a month or more of temps in the 90's and humidity ranging from the single digits to 30's. Earth Angel today: Thrips! I think my Earth Angel looks best like this (first flush): Alnwick Castle today: It can open up in the heat and become more coral: I think it looks best like this (first flush): Fragrance: Earth Angel's first blooms for me smelled like a wet dog, but now has very sweetly scented flowers. It's a clean fragrance now. Alnwick Castle smells like rasberry sorbet, and at times there is a woody element to it, like cedar. There are more mid-tones and low tones in comparison to Earth Angel's mostly high notes. Both are fragrant most of the day. AC's fragrance seems stronger to me and wafts. EA's fragrance doesn't waft for me. Plant habit: both are upright growers. Thorns on both are moderate. Thorns on EA are smaller. Vigor: EA required quite a bit of pampering in my garden to get it to grow, but most people say EA is extremely vigorous. AC is quite vigorous in my garden without pampering. Productivity: EA is too young for me to say, others have described it as prolific. AC is not what you would call a prolific bloomer, but also not particularly stingy. Personally, I would replace AC if I lost it. I'm not so sure about EA.

I don't think I have seen healthier plants. Your citrus I am happy to see are from my friends at Four Winds. Of all plants I think citrus is the one that will tell you EXACTLY its state of health just by looking at the foliage. Al

Hi there!! I don't think I've been to this forum before, but have had trouble with my container of annuals this summer. Now that we're nearing the end of summer, i have 2 pots of petunias that I have to throw out, soon, they look awful! Any help on that would be great, soil mix or food secrets?! I probably filled these 2 huge pots a couple of yrs ago with cheap, generic potting soil, could that be it?
I fed with Osmocote early on, and supplemented with Schultz Bloom Plus.
My friend has gorgeous pots of annuals, she uses milorganite and an organic plant food, about 1/2c. ea. of those, i think dillutes in her watering can and waters with this 1 time a week or so. does that make sense?
Am I buyhing poor quality plants? Someone told me to buy somewhere else.
Please help, next yr. I'd like to have nicer pots of flowers!
AND help with potting mix with houseplants too, the average philodendrons, draceanas etc. I have a dark grn. draceana that is very unhappyt right now.
Mike, I have that Philodendron you have in the one pic, that has the red stems? It was on the clearance rack last yr. Lost a couple of leaves in the winter, so it really doesn't look like much now, just about 4 leaves, and it won't grow!! help!

Mike, all your plants look fat and sassy. The small Grand Duke will be big before long!

Can you tell me what the 5-1-1 mix is, or direct me to a post on this?

deb, try cutting back your petunias hard, to maybe 6-8 inches. They will branch out. Then pinching them every 4-5 inches will keep them sturdy and full. Petunias will bloom on til hard frost, so it's worth trying the cutback before throwing out.

re your neighbopr's plants, petunias do tend to get viny after awhile. Some people pinch tips more or less automatically, maybe that is what she is doing differently?

re potting mix, I've used Miracle Grow Moisture Control for several years. Very good.

It is awsome to see you took a stroll over here...Let me just start by saying that if it were not for this forum, growing my fragrant plants would be virtually impossible...Especially, the infamous gardenia...lol

Let me direct you to a thread about the mix since I do not feel I deserve any credit for these super mixes that have made it possible to post these pics..
I was encouraged to give these mixes a try, and I will forever be indebted to the one who introduced me to this, and those that have always supported me to grow what I could never grow, especially in my growing zone..
