Help my dull/poorly planned front yard!
Comments (85)The usual fix to "washouts" that Nature uses is covering the ground with plants. This holds the soil in place in spite of what water does at the surface. (It's the solution you're using at the lawn area.) I'm speculating that your landscape has not evolved enough to accomplish this or it has not specifically been addressed. The buried pipe & emitters--while they will work now and for some time--will likely become a maintenance issue or be subject to some type of failure at some point. I would not fret about them, but I would not add more. The other solution is simpler. It still bugs me the way the left side of " retaining wall" dips in at the walk. It adds a "busy," contrived quality to the scene. I think you would be better off going straight to the walk at 90*. Ideally, you would match the right side, but I can see why you didn't. I would have brought the right side out farther so this could happen. But if they are out of line with one another, I think it is preferable to the left side inward curve. Also, adding work for the future, your walk could stand to be widened, especially where it meets the stoop. An eight-inch wide strip of brick or pavers at each side would help. Whatever is planted adjacent to the walk should be low (6")...See MoreGutter Drainage System Question
Comments (6)Tiberius, The requirement for separation of storm and sanitary sewers is due to the fact that, if combined, storm water is treated at the waste water treatment plant, sometimes overwhelming the plant capacity which could cause raw sewage to flow through the plant. There is also a "Dry well" attachment for the products you mention. It is filled with sand/gravel and allows the storm water to drain slowly into the ground. The popup emitters can be disassembled for cleaning, but I'd use the dry well attachment. Hope that helps!...See MoreGutter Guards and Popup Drain Emitters
Comments (2)I installed these myself the drains and the emitter and had the same concern. I ended up getting the little mesh thing that you put in the hole where the gutter drains into the downspout. I will once I have more money need to replace the gutters as some are sagging and in some spots and will then get the screens. Had those on my old house and they worked great....See MoreJune 2020, Week 2
Comments (57)That was hilarious, Larry. That one's in our playbook, too. Nope, GDW and I weren't raptured. We were out on the fishing boat. Figures. I'm amazingly UN-frustrated with everything this year. I think our potatoes are going to be a bust. I don't care. Which means that NEXT year, if anyone here is planting potatoes, it won't be me. Bumper crop of garlic. Some are enormous. I can pick Contender beans in another couple days; otherwise, just waiting. Heidi--I've never seen so many tomatoes on one plant. Amy! What's Ron making the compost bin out of?? Pictures! Suzanne called yesterday--the milkweed plugs from Monarch Watch arrived. I'll go over this evening to plant them. Where I'm going to plant 32 plugs. . . . that'll be a good trick. lol. I haven't been there in a few days, so it will be fun to see what the plants have been up to. We had so much fun fishing yesterday. Previously we hadn't been finding hardly any shad--hard to catch fish when you don't have bait. Thursday we were out for a while, but we didn't get out early enough, so it was hot and not that much fun. We rectified the situation yesterday--got out earlier, saw shad EVERYWHERE, and we caught 13 perfect-sized catfish in 2.5 hours. First successful fishing trip in 2 years. Actually only one of about 4-5 fishing trips in 2 years. I am so lazy today! I look around and don't see anything that HAS to be done! lol Guess I'll go pick the rest of the garlic and harvest some kale, do a walk-around the rest of the yard....See Morespunky_MA_z6
