Better to cluster multiples or dot individual plants?

What is more interesting and effective in the landscape, to cluster 3 or 4 of the same plant together, or to plant individually?

I am redoing a garden area where I will replant with perennials. Just contemplating whether, instead of planting one of this and one of that, I might be better off in terms of the visual impact by planting fewer kinds, and planting them in groups of 3 or 5 of each thing. I'm thinking about using ornamental grasses, sedums, Rudbeckia Goldsturm, Echinaceas, probably some kind of silver foliaged Artemesia, maybe some asters for the fall.

Like so much else in landscape design, the "it depends" answer presents itself.

Will the view of your bed be from a distance, or up close? Drive-by (high-speed) vs walking speed? Is the bed big or small? Are you a person who enjoys the details, or the sweep of the big picture?

By the way, you might want to make sure you have some spring interest in that bed, or will you mostly be seeing it in summer and fall?

Was looking around the Conifer Forum yesterday... mainly because people do have interesting ways of showcasing their gardens and collections. In the link, 3 people have posted pictures.

I did some research because I think I'm having the same problem. I believe the problem may be under watering. Here's what I found at http://mrec.ifas.ufl.edu/foliage/folnotes/ficus.htm: "Excessive moisture stress Symptoms - Small reddish spots, 1-3mm across, on the undersides of leaves of F. lyrata. The symptom is usually observed on stock plants in full sun which have been air layered, and most frequently during the driest months of December through June. This condition is rare on plants grown in shade. Leaves on wilted layers or cuttings of F. elastica, and possibly some other species, remain in relaxed orientation after normal moisture content is restored. This is a permanent condition. Branches of trees in an active state of growth may bend under moisture stress, then partially recover, leaving a permanent kink or "dogleg" in the stem. Control - Severe moisture stress can usually be avoided through good nursery practices. Leaf spotting can be prevented by timely irrigation of stock and use of the vertical slit technique of air layering versus the girdling procedure. Permanent petiole wilt and stem kinking can be avoided with adequate soil moisture and high humidity during propagation. Prevention of excessive root development outside the container eliminates most of the shock that occurs when large segments of root are severed from plants because roots extend into soil below the pot. Use of plastic ground covers, drip irrigation and root pruning during production usually eliminates root pruning shock when plants are removed." My large fruited red cherry vine is almost 12 feet long. The lower 5ish feet doesn't seem to be doing too much in the way of leaves etc. The only real activity on the vine is near the new end. It sure seems like a long way for the water and mutrients to go to get from the roots to the tips. I wonder if I short circuited the vine so that it could grow roots further up the vine if it would help it any. Not so I could cut the lower half off, just so as to give the water and nutrients a shorter path to the new growth. The plant could still transport to and from the original roots, but it could have an alternate shorter route also. I don't have much time for these kinds of experiments right now, but maybe I'll find the time and inspiration to do this. It seems like it might be better than seedlings in July. I'm not sure how I'd get the vines out of the cages to get the most logical spot on the vine to soil. Inside the cages is bare vine. They bend over the top of the cage and the new growth is toward the end of the vine hanging near the ground.

it will need to be hardened off ..... moving from indoors.. to outdoors ... you can not take it straight into sunshine ... you could un pot ... separate.. repot in separate pots... and keep them in dark shade for a week ... light shade for a week ... then filtered light .. perhaps sun at dusk or dawn ... the time lengths also take into account the disturbance of the roots from potting .... and then into the sun ... and you could always keep one potted.. in case you kill the others... you will have a fail safe ... eric.. if you cool the grass around a house ... wind will bring the coolness into the house ... your roof and insulation ... are supposed to take care of what hits the roof ... and with the trees further away ... what will not hit the house.. is the leaves falling off and choking your gutters... seed pods ... roof rats who use trees to get up there.. etc .... ken

I use many 5-gallon buckets to grow pretty much anything in - tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and squash - the squash plants get HUGE. I think mine do so well because I created DIY self-watering buckets (see: Global Buckets). Once the roots are done filling the potting mix, they migrate through the holes I've punched at the bottom of the upper bucket and tap straight into the water reservoir of the lower bucket - sort of a quasi hydroponic scenario. I have had outstanding results from pretty much anything planted in buckets - the failures I pretty much attribute to selecting incorrect varieties for my local growing conditions (i.e. growing tomatoes better suited for cooler locations). Because of our arid climate, pests and disease are rarely huge issues. I will say I did not have great luck growing tomatoes or squash in 5-gallon buckets before turning them into self-watering vessels - peppers and cucumbers did okay. I just couldn't keep up with the watering, which was easily a twice a day affair, and the plants suffered as a result. A healthy full-grown tomato plant in full production can drink 2 gallons of water per day. My container garden is in full year-round sun on the south side of my house and in very close proximity (within 10' of the house), so mid-day mid-summer temperatures can easily reach 110 degrees. Nighttime temperatures almost always fall below 65, so the plants see wide ranges of temperatures almost every day. Keeping them properly watered by hand is futile by mid-June. I love planting in plastic whiskey barrels because they are large enough for even the biggest tomato plants, they look nice and hold moisture longer. Set up a simple drip system on a timer and the water issue is non-existent. They work great for a varied herb garden, multiple pepper plants, tons of lettuce, two tomato plants, large squash plants, you name it. Plastic whiskey barrels are less than $20 at HD. I think I've amassed 19 now, though 4 are permanently designated for extra dwarf fruit trees that are thriving. I change up the other 15 each season for whatever I decide to plant. I think they hold about 20 gallons of growing medium, so that is plenty for most plants for one season. Just remember to feed them regularly, as nutrients are quickly utilized by the plant or washed out the drainage holes by watering. I stick to a schedule of fertilizing each week or two and the plants do well.

In general a garden will have more visual impact with massed quantities of individual species played off each other. The standard recommendation of odd numbers of 3 to 5 is really more of a minimum in my opinion, and could be a lot more than that depending on the desired look. Repetition of plants elsewhere in the garden also gives continuity to a planting design, and can direct the view where you want it to be seen. Some of the plants can very easily be multiplied easily by yourself during the growing season to increase their area coverage, Sedum spectabile is one that roots easily from cuttings or can easily be divided in the early spring.

Thanks, both helpful answers. Yes, I will throw some things for spring in there. I already have daffs/narcissus, alliums, and a few other spring bulbs in this garden, but I could add some other stuff. And, there are already some hostas, quite a bit of Northern Sea Oats, a patch of red monarda, some Limelight Hydranges, and a pair of mature magnolias, Ann and Jane.

Duluth, I see what you mean in that post -- to me, its too busy. Helped me to firm up the answer I already had in my mind, keep it simple with fewer types of plants and multiples of each. I think that will be more attractive in the end.

If a plant in the landscape is one-of-a-kind, it had better be a substantial specimen if it is to register any impact. It almost always requires groups of plants working together in order to make a statement worthy of being made. Like Bahia, I think 3s & 5s are more like minimums. The other best way to make a landscape look amateurish is to alternate two different plants in a continuing line as is frequently done with "edging" plants. It's too "granny."
