I wanted to share some of my pictures of my spring plantings in my high tunnels in North Central Kansas. I have 6 tunnels that I am growing crops in. I have more growing space outside, but I am just getting that planted. I have one more building that has onions, cherry and grape tomatoes and bell peppers in it. I have to finish weeding it before I show that one.

Thats pretty amazing to see the high tunnel like that. I have a cousin who live in Kansas.

Newbie, don't waste your time.....the reason why spring bulbs are planted when they are is because the bulb needs a particular temperature range to promote ROOTS. Without a root, the tulip, the crocus, the daffodil bulb is just fodder for squirrels, mice, skunks and whathaveya. You didn't plant them when you were supposed to. Now you pay. They are useless unless you can keep them in cold storage until next fall. Chances of that....keeping a bulb for 7 months...is pretty nil. The bulbs will dry out and be useless. Its forever being said ---"oh, that's alright, just plant them, they're tough, they'll probably just grow foliage until next season"....and so on and so on. They wont. I suggest you throw them into the compost pile now so that in the fall what comes from them, might be used in your garden to promote bulbs that have been properly planted. Next fall....write across your calendars....BUY BULBS PLANT BULBS. Do this for the months of September/October/November/December.....whenever you get around to purchasing them. But, when you purchase....plant them IMMEDIATELY.

I'd put them in the refrigerator for a week, then plant them and see what they do. If they don't bloom this spring, they most likely will next spring.

You can contact John Trager via email @ the HBG and he will respond to you. Might take a while but I would say, yes - they usually have a quite a few shick's for sale although when I went to the sale today all of those Echinopsis in Joe's pic were gone. Ordering plants from them is a lengthy process but if you are patient it can happen.

Wow, what do you plan to do with all of the tomato seedlings and other seedlings on your shelves? You must have another main garden outside your 'greenhouse'.

There is a guy just a few houses down from me that put up a structure like yours - they started in the winter with putting up the metal hoop pieces. They then put up wooden walls on the two "flat" sides and then finally this spring they put plastic over the whole thing.

It would be nice to have a good bit of land for this purpose :)

They are the plants that I will sell this year at the farmers markets I attend. There are over 500 tomato plants and I still have more pepper plants to move out this week. I don't plant tomatoes outside as I would have more than I can sell. I am going to plant another 35 in a small hoop house for sale later in the summer and early fall.

I "Garden" on almost 3/4 of an acre.

Very nice. I assume you heat your HTs? If not, how much warmer than ambient is it at night?

No heat at all. We have had a pretty warm overnight temps. Usually the low temps are 2-3 degrees above the outside temps, that is if the wind isn't blowing. They are about the same if the wind is blowing. I use row cover to help keep the temps up. Last year I had tomatoes planted and a cold spell came in and it got down t 18-20 degrees and I had 2 layers of row cover and they were fine. The row cover, inside the high tunnel is the best way to go. It really holds some heat in.

Lots of work and know-how to grow so much, so nicly.

I think, even if it is a bit windy and cilly, still cold frame and/or tunnels are better. Because the wind is not blowing on your seedlings/plants. Therefore they will not lose heat as fast.

Really nice setup. Thanks for posting the link to your pictures. I see you have rows of vegetables planted in the earth. Will they be for home consumption or to sell the vegetables at a farmer's market?

cyrus_gardner: I agree with you. Very little wind and the buildings reduces the stress on the vegetables. They can grow in a nice warm, wind free environment. Well that is until you have to vent the building.

Anney: I feed my family from our garden and sell produce at 3 different farmers markets. I will attend farmers markets for 22-26 weeks. I am also planning on a winter CSA.
